AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE

For the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below issues the following Airworthiness Directive (AD) under subregulation 39.001(1) of CASR 1998.  The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.

AD/ATR 42/5 Main Landing Gear Side Brace Assembly 8/2007

Applicability:

Model ATR 42-200, -300, and -320 aircraft, all serial numbers, with main landing gear fitted with side brace assemblies part number D22710000 not incorporating suffix -8 (ATR modification 8346 - MESSIER DOWTY Service Bulletin
631-32-176); and equipped with upper arm part number D56778-10.

Requirement:

Action in accordance with the requirements of DGAC AD F-2005-106.

Note:  MESSIER DOWTY Service Bulletin 631-32-181 Revision 2, or later EASA approved revision, refers.

Compliance:

As specified in the Requirement document, with a revised effective date of
2 August 2007.

This Airworthiness Directive becomes effective on 2 August 2007.

Background:

A report was received of a MLG unlock warning indication on an ATR aircraft during taxi operation.  Inspection found that the upper MLG side brace assembly was cracked.  Investigation revealed that crack propagation occurred at a corrosion pit on the surface under the part identification plate.  This Directive requires visual and NDT inspections.
