Airbus Industrie A330 Series Aeroplanes

AD/A330/86 MLG Bogie Beam 3/2008

Applicability:

All Model A330-200 and A330-300 series aircraft, all serial numbers; except aircraft on which Airbus modification 54500 has been incorporated in production or aircraft with Airbus Service Bulletin A330-32-3212 incorporated in service.

Requirement:

Action in accordance with the requirements of EASA AD 2007-0314.

Note:  Airbus Service Bulletin A330-32-3225 original issue, and Messier-Dowty VSB No. A33/34-32-271 original issue, or later EASA approved revisions, refer.

Compliance:

As specified in the Requirement document, with a revised effective date of
13 March 2008.

This Airworthiness Directive becomes effective on 13 March 2008.

Background:

An operator report was received of a fracture of the right hand main landing gear bogie beam on an A330 aircraft whilst turning during low speed ground taxi manoeuvres.  The bogie fractured aft of the pivot point and remained attached to the sliding tube by the brake reaction rods.  Investigation revealed the failure initiated from corrosion pitting on the bore of the bogie beam.  The internal paint had degraded which lead to a loss of cadmium plating.  If not corrected, this situation under higher speed could result in the aircraft departing the runway, the bogie detaching from the aircraft, or a gear collapse.
