AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE

For the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below issues the following Airworthiness Directive (AD) under subregulation 39.001(1) of CASR 1998.  The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.

Airbus Industrie A330 Series Aeroplanes

AD/A330/66 Inertial Reference System 13/2006 TX

Applicability:

A330-200 andA330-300 series aeroplanes, all certified models, all serial numbers equipped with either:

- Honeywell Air Data Inertial Reference Unit (ADIRU) Part Number (P/N) HG2030AC0X (with X in between 0 and 9 inclusive) or HG2030ADYY (with YY in between 00 and 10 inclusive), or

-    Northrop Grumman (formerly Litton) ADIRU P/N 465020-030303ZZ (with ZZ in between 00 and 12 inclusive).

Requirement:

If not previously accomplished, insert Temporary Revision (TR) 2.05.00/67 (applying to Honeywell ADIRU standards) or TR 2.05.00/68 (applying to Northrop Grumman ADIRU standards), as applicable, in the Aircraft Flight Manual (AFM).

The operational limitations introduced by this Directive are cancelled and the TRs may be removed from the AFM if either of the following has been accomplished:

-    at least one of these Airbus Modifications was embodied during production 47552, 47589, 50784, 51096, 51144, 51828, 52797, 54678 or any later approved standards, provided that the ADIRU has not been returned to the standards identified in the Applicability Statement of this Directive.

-    at least one of the following Airbus Service Bulletins (SB) or any later approved standards, provided that the ADIRU has not been returned to the standards identified in the Applicability Statement of this Directive:

•   SB A330-34-3132, which installs Northrop Grumman ADIRU P/N 465020-03030314,

•   SB A330-34-3159, which installs Northrop Grumman ADIRU P/N 465020-03030315,

•   SB A330-34-3165, which installs Honeywell ADIRU P/N HG2030AE22,

• SB A330-34-3104, which installs Honeywell ADIRU P/N HG2030AC11.

Note:  EASA AD 2006-0232 refers.

Compliance:

Within three days after the effective date of this Directive.

This Airworthiness Directive becomes effective on 30 October 2006.

Background:

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has advised that the magnetic variation table which are implemented in the above Honeywell and Northrop Grumman ADIRUs are obsolete in certain countries.

Studies have shown that, for a given airport, a difference greater than 3° between the magnetic heading and the runway heading (QFU) could lead to an unsafe situation during the phases of Cat 2 or Cat 3 automatic landing and roll out.

This Directive mandates the operational restriction introduced by the AFM TR 2.05.00/67 and AFM TR 2.05.00/68.  The A330 AFM TRs provide the list of affected airport and the date from which the «AUTOLAND» and «ROLL-OUT» are prohibited.
