AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE

For the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below issues the following Airworthiness Directive (AD) under subregulation 39.001(1) of CASR 1998.  The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.

Airbus Industrie A330 Series Aeroplanes

AD/A330/103 Main Landing Gear Pin W1 9/2009

Applicability:

Model A330-201, -202, -203, 223, -243, -301, -302, -303, -321, -322, -323, -341,
-342 and -343 aircraft, all serial numbers, except aircraft with AIRBUS Modification 54500 incorporated in production or AIRBUS Service Bulletin A330-32-3212 incorporated in service.

Requirement:

Action in accordance with the requirements of EASA AD 2009-0138.

Compliance:

As specified in the Requirement document, with a revised effective date of
27 August 2009.

This Airworthiness Directive becomes effective on 27 August 2009.

Background:

Two failures of a Main Landing Gear (MLG) Pin W1 occurred during the element fatigue test of a redesigned retraction link.  An investigation by AIRBUS demonstrated that the life limit of MLG Pin W1 part number 201275673 and 201478614 must be reduced to 11,150 landings, which is below the life limit stated in AIRBUS A330 ALS Part 4 revision 01 approved by EASA on 29 May 2009.
