EXPLANATORY STATEMENT

AMENDMENT OF WEIGHTS AND MEASURES (NATIONAL STANDARDS) REGULATIONS

STATUTORY RULES 1983 NO. 64

These Statutory Rules will amend the Weights and Measures (National Standards) Regulations by prescribing in accordance with Sections 7 and 18A of the Weights and Measures (National Standards) Act 1960 (the Act) certain new and additional units of measurement of physical quantities, and in so far as section 18A is concerned, prescribing an amount representing the rate of salary above which the appointment, transfer or promotion of a person to an office in the National Standards Commission is subject to the approval of the Minister.

The Statutory Rules prescribe, for the first time, units of measurement of magnetic flux and magnetic flux density. They also amend the definition of the “candela” in regulation 56 and prescribe additional units of measurement of frequency, power and pressure by expanding Schedules 8, 13 and 14 to the Regulations.

The Statutory Rules also prescribe, for the purposes of Section 18A(4) of the Act an amount of $40 499. This figure represents an amount 1 dollar less than the current salary of a level 1 officer in the Second Division of the Australian Public Service.
