EXPLANATORY NOTE
Veterans' Entitlements (Repatriation Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme - Benefits for Commonwealth veterans, allied veterans and allied mariners) Instrument
The attached Instrument makes consequential variations to the Repatriation Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme as a result of the Veterans' Affairs Legislation Amendment (2001 Budget Measures) Act 2001 (the new legislation).
The new legislation extended the availability of pharmaceutical benefits under the Repatriation Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme to Commonwealth veterans, allied veterans and allied mariners. Previously such benefits were only available to Australian veterans or their dependants.
Under the new legislation a procedure was established for granting a pharmaceutical benefits card to the relevant beneficiaries and as a consequence it was necessary to amend the Repatriation Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme to refer to that card.
The attached Instrument varied the Repatriation Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme to provide that a person who holds a Repatriation Pharmaceutical Benefits Card under section 93X of the new legislation is eligible to receive pharmaceutical benefits under the Repatriation Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.
