REGULATIONS UNDER THE SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY RESEARCH ACT 1920‑1926.
I, THE GOVERNOR‑GENERAL in and over the Commonwealth of Australia, acting with the advice of the Federal Executive Council, hereby make the following Regulations under the Science and Industry Research Act 1920‑1926.

Amendment of Science and Industry Research Regulations.
(Statutory Rules 1926, No. 125, as amended to this date.)
1. After regulation 3a of the Science and Industry Research Regulations, the following regulations are inserted:—
Salaries of certain officers.
“3b—(1.) Male officers of the Council classified in or subsequently appointed, promoted or transferred to any of the offices specified in the following table shall be paid annual salaries in accordance with the scales shown therein opposite their respective offices:—

“(3.) Subject to the provisions of sub‑regulation (9.) of this regulation, the classifications and salaries set out in sub‑regulations (1.) and (2.) of this regulation shall be applicable to all research officers who are employed on work of a continuous nature. A research officer employed for a limited period for the performance of any special investigations shall, notwithstanding anything hereinbefore contained, be paid such amounts as the Minister, on the recommendation of the Council, determines.
“(4.) Subject to the provisions of sub‑regulation (6.) of this regulation and to the Council being satisfied as to his or her good conduct, diligence and efficiency, a research officer upon being classified in or being appointed, promoted or transferred to an office within the undermentioned classes shall be advanced in salary annually from one subdivision to the next higher subdivision within the following limits, namely:—
Class E from the first to the fifth subdivision.
Class D from the first to the fifth subdivision.
Class C from the first to the second subdivision.
Class B from the first to the second subdivision.
Class A from the first to the second subdivision.
“(5.) Advancement from subdivision to subdivision within the classes set out in sub‑regulations (1.) and (2.) of this regulation shall, except in so far as provision for such advancement is made in sub‑regulation (4.) of this regulation, be in the discretion of the Council.
“(6.) The Council may promote a research officer of outstanding merit either by appointing him or her to a higher class more appropriate to the nature of the work which he or she is capable of performing or by advancing him or her within any one year from any one to any other subdivision of a class.
“(7.) In the case of a research officer appointed prior to the 1st July, 1933, the first annual increment prescribed by sub‑regulation (4.) of this regulation shall accrue on the 1st July, 1934.
“(8.) In the case of a research officer appointed subsequent to the 1st July, 1933, the first annual increment prescribed by sub‑regulation (4.) of this regulation shall accrue either on the 1st January or the 1st July whichever comes first after the expiration of a period of one year from the date of appointment.
“(9.) Research officers formerly appointed: as research students under the Science and Industry Endowment Act 1926 and subsequently Appointed as officers of the Council, prior to the coming in force of this regulation on terms which provide for the granting of increments over a period of three years shall continue to receive increments in accordance with the terms of their appointment. Upon the expiration of the periods for which they were so appointed such officers shall be classified in accordance with the provisions of sub‑regulation (1.) or sub‑regulation (2.), as the case may be, of this regulation and shall be paid increments in accordance with the provisions of this regulation.
“3c.—(1.) Non‑adult technical officers of the Council shall be paid annual salaries in accordance with the following scale:—

“(2.) Adult technical officers of the Council shall be paid annual salaries in accordance with the following scale:—

“(3.) Subject to the Council being satisfied as to the good conduct, diligence and efficiency of an adult technical officer, such officer shall, upon being classified in any of the first four subdivisions specified in sub‑regulation (2) of this regulation, be advanced in salary annually up to the fifth subdivision.
“(4.) Advancement of an adult technical officer from one subdivision to another subdivision specified in sub‑regulation (2.) of this regulation shall, except in so far as provision for such advancement is made in sub‑regulation (3.) of this regulation, be in the discretion of the Council.
“(5.) In the case of an adult technical officer appointed prior to the 1st July, 1933, the first annual increment prescribed by sub‑regulation (3.) of this regulation shall accrue on the 1st July, 1934.
“(6.) In the case of an adult technical officer appointed subsequent to the 1st July, 1933, the first annual increment prescribed by sub‑regulation (3.) of this regulation shall accrue either on the 1st January or the 1st July whichever comes first after the expiration of a period of one year from the date of appointment.
Cost of living variations
“3.d.(1.) The salaries payable under sub‑regulations (1.) and (2.) of regulation 3b and sub‑regulation (1.) and (2.) of regulation 3c of these Regulations are based on cost of living conditions as at the 1st July, 1926, and shall be adjusted in accordance with variations in the cost of living subsequent on that date in the same manner as the salaries of officers who are subject to the Commonwealth Public Service Act 1922‑1932 are adjusted.”.
2. Regulation 5 of the Science and Industry Research Regulations is amended by inserting at the beginning thereof the words “Subject to these Regulations,”.
