EXPLANATORY STATEMENT

STATUTORY RULE 1982 NO 293

ISSUED BY THE AUTHORITY OF THE MINISTER FOR COMMUNICATIONS

The Radiocommunications Licence Fees Act 1982 imposes fees in the nature of taxes for the grant or renewal of radiocommunication licences with the actual rates and form of exemption fixed by regulations.

The Radiocommunications Licence Fees Regulations fix the level of fees payable for the grant or renewal of a radiocommunications licence.

This Statutory Rule increases the level of fees payable for the grant or renewal of radiocommunications licences in line with increases in the cost of management of the spectrum, and also fixes fees for the new categories of licences introduced as a result of advancing technology. The fees are designed to cover the costs of radio frequency management in line with the Government’s ‘user pays’ policy.
