Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999
Notice under subsection 351(2)
PROPOSED PROCLAMATION
TO AMEND THE BOUNDARIES OF NORFOLK ISLAND NATIONAL PARK
Members of the public are invited to provide comments on a proposal to amend the boundaries of Norfolk Island National Park through a Proclamation made by the Governor-General under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.
The proposed Proclamation will add the following areas to the Park:
- the islets occurring along the northern coastline of the Mount Pitt Section of Norfolk Island National Park bounded by the line shown in Figure 1, including Moo-oo Stone, Green Pool Stone, Cathedral Rock and Bird Rock, but excluding the marine waters within the boxed area;
- the northern portion of the existing Selwyn Reserve; and
- Nepean Island.
The proposed Proclamation will also incorporate Norfolk Island Botanic Garden into Norfolk Island National Park, merging the two Commonwealth reserves into a single reserve.
It is proposed that the additional areas be managed as part of Norfolk Island National Park, in accordance with IUCN protected area management Category II (National Park) to preserve the area in its natural condition and encourage and regulate the appropriate use, appreciation and enjoyment of the area by the public. The Botanic Garden will continue to be managed under IUCN Category IV as Norfolk Island’s official botanic garden, managed to increase knowledge, appreciation and enjoyment of the island’s plant heritage.
The Director invites members of the public to comment on the proposal. Comments should be sent to:
