PIG SLAUGHTER LEVY REGULATIONS (AMENDMENT)
The Pig Slaughter Levy Act 1971 (the Act) provides for a levy to be imposed on the slaughter at an abattoir of pigs for sale for human consumption.
Section 8 of the Act empowers the Governor-General to make regulations for the purpose of section 6 of the Act, Section 6 provides that the levy shall be the aggregate of:
an amount for research purposes, prescribed by the Governor-General (not exceeding 20 cents) after considering any recommendations regarding this amount, to the Minister for Primary Industry from the Australian Pig Industry Research Committee; and
an amount for promotion purposes, prescribed by the Governor-General (not exceeding $1) after considering any recommendations regarding this amount, to the Minister for Primary Industry from the Pork Promotion Committee.
The Pig Slaughter Levy Regulations prescribe an amount of 15 cents per pig slaughtered for research purposes and an amount of 60 cents per pig slaughtered for promotion purposes, a total levy of 75 cents per pig slaughtered.
The Pork Promotion Committee has recommended to the Minister that the promotion portion of the Pig Slaughter Levy be increased to 80 cents per pig slaughtered. Increased costs of promotion and a desire by the Committee to expand its promotion
campaign means that an increase in levy is necessary. The Minister agrees with the Committee’s recommendation.
The purpose of the proposed regulation is to apply an increased operative rate of levy for promotion purposes, of 80 cents per pig slaughtered from 1 March 1985. From that date the Pig Slaughter Levy will be 95 cents per pig slaughtered, being the aggregate of an amount of 15 cents per pig for research purposes and 80 cents per pig for promotion purposes.
