PIG SLAUGHTER LEVY REGULATIONS (AMENDMENT)
The Pig Slaughter Levy Act 1971, provides for levies to be imposed on the slaughter at an abattoir of pigs for sale for human consumption
Section 8 of the Act provides that the Governor-General may make regulations for the purpose of:
- prescribing a rate (not exceeding 20 cents) per pig slaughtered, for the purposes of research
Section 6 (2) of the Act also requires the Governor-General to take into consideration any recommendation made by the Australian Pig Industry Research Committee to the Minister for Primary Industry and regulations shall not be made prescribing such a rate higher than the rate last recommended by the Committee to the Minister.
Increased costs arising from monetary inflation in recent years have made an increase in levy rate necessary in order to maintain a satisfactory level of research effort.
In accordance with section 6 of the Pig Slaughter Levy Act 1971, The Australian Pig Industry Research Committee has recommended to the Minister for Primary Industry an increase in the rate of levy to apply under paragraph 6 (i) (a)
The purpose of the proposed regulation is to apply from 1 November 1984, a rate of levy of 15 cents per pig slaughtered.
The Act, as amended by the Pig Slaughter Levy Amendment Act 1981 (Assented to 25 May 1981) prescribes a maximum rate of 20 cents per pig slaughtered.
Currently the operative rate for research purposes is 10 cents per pig slaughtered.
