For distinguished service to strengthening the defence relationship between Australia and Japan through commitment, leadership and strategic foresight as Chief of Staff, Maritime Staff and Chief of Staff, Joint Staff of the Japan Self-Defense Forces.

Admiral Katsutoshi KAWANO, Tokyo, Japan
For distinguished service to strengthening the defence relationship between Australia and Japan through commitment, leadership and strategic foresight as Chief of Staff, Maritime Staff and Chief of Staff, Joint Staff of the Japan Self-Defense Forces.
Admiral Kawano has long been an advocate of furthering the bilateral defence relationship between Australia and Japan. He championed greater cooperation in Maritime security with Australia, and contributed to strengthening the trilateral partnership with the United States Navy. He promoted opportunities for enhancing interoperability between the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and the Royal Australian Navy and strengthened cooperation through increased training exercises and the exchange of institutional knowledge. His contributions and leadership have enhanced the security of the Indo-Pacific region.
