Notice of intended publication of unpublished work kept in public library

Special & Rare Collections of University of Tasmania Library, Churchill Avenue, Sandy Bay, Hobart, (Postal address Special &Rare Collections Private Bag 25 Hobart 7001) intends to digitise and publish online in the Library Open Repository the previously unpublished sketchbook of Sarah Elizabeth Emma Mitchell. This work consists of approximately 200 fine detailed ink drawings by Catherine Penwarne Mitchell, Sarah Mitchell’s sister, and accompanied by dated journal-style descriptions written by Sarah Mitchell. The sketches depict daily life and outings on the East Coast of Tasmania in the 19th century. The sketches estimated to have been drawn between 1860 –1875 during Catherine’s lifetime, were compiled with the accompanying descriptions after Catherine’s death by her sister Sarah, between 1828-1933.

The sketchbook was gifted to the Royal Society of Tasmania in 1937 by Sarah Mitchell and is housed in the University of Tasmania Library Special & Rare collections, along with other items of The Royal Society of Tasmania’s  collection. 

Any person claiming to be the owner of the copyright of the Sarah Elizabeth Emma Mitchell sketchbook may give notice of his or her claim to the University of Tasmania Library, by whom the notice is given:
