EXPLANATORY STATEMENT
STATUTORY RULES 1986 NO. 217
NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AUSTRALIA REGULATIONS
(Issued under the authority of the Minister of State for Arts, Heritage and Environment)
The purpose of the National Museum of Australia Regulations is to give effect to arrangements governing public control on the premises and land of the National Museum of Australia (‘the Museum’).
Regulation 1
Formal. Provides for citation.
Regulation 2
Formal. Provides for interpretation.
Regulation 3
Provides that the Director of the Museum (‘the Director’) may appoint security officers and that the Director shall issue them with an identity certificate.
Regulation 4
Confers certain powers upon security officers including the power to apprehend with reasonable force a person who is reasonably believed to have committed certain offences against the Regulations, the power to remove a person so apprehended from a Museum building or Museum land and the power to direct a person to leave the Museum building and/or Museum land in specified circumstances.

Regulation 5
Creates certain offences in relation to the conduct of a person in a Museum building or on Museum land.
Regulation 6
Provides that the Director may in specified places display a notice prohibiting or imposing conditions or restrictions in relation to the possession or use of photographic apparatus.
Regulation 7
Provides that a security officer may issue directions to a person in charge of a motor vehicle on Museum land and prescribes a penalty for a person’s failure to comply with the direction.
Regulation 8
Provides that the Director may delegate to a person any of his or her powers under the Regulations, other than the power of delegation.
