EXPLANATORY STATEMENT

Statutory Rules 1988 No. 258

National Measurement Act 1960

National Measurement Regulations (Amendment)

Issued by the Authority of the Minister for Industry, Technology and Commerce.

1. The National Measurement Regulations (Amendment) amends the regulations to the National Measurement Act 1960 to complete the final legislative measures for metrication. Most of the non-metric units of measurement contained in the schedules to the regulations are withdrawn. However the inch and the foot are specified as additional units of measurement, using sub-section 7(3) of the Act, for particular purposes.

2. The requirement for a table of conversion factors for the conversion of imperial units of measurement (being Australian legal units of measurement) to metric units of measurement (also being Australian legal units of measurement) is no longer required. All of the conversion factors are now contained in a single table for the conversion of units of measurement (not being Australian legal units of measurement) to Australian legal units of measurement.
