Motor Vehicle Standards Act 1989

Motor Vehicle Standards Regulations (Amendment)

Section 42 of the Motor Vehicle Standards Act 1989 (the Act) provides that the Governor-General may make regulations for the purposes of the Act. Section 24 of the Act provides that the regulations may prescribe fees to be paid to the Commonwealth in respect of, amongst other things, approval for the placing of compliance plates on vehicles.

The Schedule to the Motor Vehicle Standards Regulations (the Regulations) prescribes the fees for a number of matters. Item 1 prescribed a fee of $6.50 for granting of authority to place a compliance plate on a vehicle other than a motor cycle. Item 2 prescribed a fee of $3.25 for granting of authority to place a compliance plate on a motor cycle.

The amendments to the Regulations increase the fees prescribed by Items 1 and 2 to $7.50 and $3.75 respectively. The increased fees are expected to raise an additional $600,000 per annum. In addition, a minor error in the heading to the Schedule has been corrected.

The amending Regulations commence on 1 March 1994.
