LIVE-STOCK SLAUGHTER

(EXPORT INSPECTION CHARGE) ACT 1979

The Live-stock Slaughter (Export Inspection Charge) Act 1979 (‘the Act’) provides for the Government to impose charges aimed at recovering a proportion of Commonwealth inspection costs by way of a levy on the slaughter of live-stock at premises used in connection with the slaughter and dressing of animals for export.

Section 8 of the Act provides that the Governor-General may make regulations for the purposes of sections 4, 5 and 6. Section 4 provides for the definition of classes of live-stock, section 5 provides for the imposition of the charge, and section 6 provides for the operative rates of charge on the slaughter of various classes of live-stock to be the rates applicable to those classes under the regulations, subject to the maximum rates of charge permitted by the Act.

The regulations provide for a decrease of approximately 20% in the operative rate of export inspection charges in relation to the slaughter of live-stock for export with effect from 1 July 1984.

The decreased inspection charges imposed by the regulations are an interim measure pending the introduction into Parliament of amending legislation to alter the mechanism and basis of charging for the inspection of meat by the Commonwealth.

Details of the regulations are attached.
