EXPLANATORY STATEMENT
JURY EXEMPTION ACT 1965
JURY EXEMPTION REGULATIONS (AMENDMENT)
(STATUTORY RULES 1989 No.185)
The purpose of the regulation is to amend the Jury Exemption Regulations is to exempt from jury service in all Federal, State and Territory courts certain Commonwealth employees who hold, of for the time being perform the duties of, specific offices in the Departments of the Parliament and specific positions in the Department of State being the Department of Defence. The absence on jury service of these Commonwealth employees would cause serious inconvenience in administration. The regulation exempts persons holding, or for the time being performing the duties of, the following offices and positions -
• Clerk of the Senate;
• Deputy Clerk of the Senate;
• the Clerk-Assistant (Table), Clerk-Assistant (Procedure) Clerk-Assistant (Management) Clerk-Assistant (Committees) and the Principal Parliamentary Officer Table Office in the Department of the Senate;
• Usher of the Black Rod;
• Secretary to a committee established by the Senate, the House of Representatives, or jointly by the Senate and the House of Representatives, including a committee established by an Act;
• Clerk of the House of Representatives;
• Deputy Clerk of the House of Representatives;
• the Clerk Assistant (Procedure), Clerk Assistant (Committees), Clerk Assistant (Table), Clerk Assistant (Administration), the Senior Parliamentary Officer Table Office and the Senior Parliamentary Officer Bills and Papers Office in the Department of the House of Representatives;
• Sergeant-at-Arms;
• the Principal Parliamentary Reporter, Assistant Principal Parliamentary Reporter, Leader of Staff, Supervising Reporter, Administrative Officer, Parliamentary Officer (Finance), Parliamentary Officer (Personnel) and Personnel Officer in the Department of the Parliamentary Reporting Staff;
• Secretary to the Joint House Department;
• the Deputy Director (Defence Signals Directorate), Assistant Secretary (Special Undertakings Branch), Deputy Chief of Facility (Joint Defence Facility, Pine Gap), Australian Chief of Security (Joint Defence Facility, Pine Gap) and Engineer Class 3 (Joint Defence Facility, Pine Gap).
