INVITATION TO COMMENT

RENAMING OF COMMONWEALTH MARINE RESERVES TO MARINE PARKS

Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, Section 351

As the Director of National Parks, I invite your comments on changing the name of Commonwealth
marine reserves to marine parks.

People have told us that the name Commonwealth marine reserves sounds more like a defence training area, rather than an amazing place to dive and snorkel. I hope that renaming these special places will help build public awareness and reinforce that marine parks, like other parks, are for people to use and enjoy, as well as for protecting important marine habitats and species. The proposed new names are listed in Schedule 1 to this notice.

Commonwealth marine reserves, as proclaimed under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, are in Commonwealth waters, more than three nautical miles from the coast. Parks Australia manages these on behalf of the Australian Government.

No other changes are being made to the proclaimed Commonwealth marine reserves through this process. Australians are being asked to comment on draft management plans for these reserves through a separate process.
