Invitation to comment on a trial of a genetically modified (GM) vaccine for the prevention of respiratory disease in horses (DIR 214)

The Gene Technology Regulator is assessing an application from The University of Queensland to conduct a trial, under limited and controlled conditions, of a genetically modified (GM) vaccine for the prevention of respiratory disease in horses. The trial is proposed to take place at the Queensland Animal Science Precinct at the University of Queensland’s Gatton campus. Up to 10 trial horses would be vaccinated.

The Regulator has prepared a Risk Assessment and Risk Management Plan (RARMP) for this application and welcomes written submissions relating to the protection of human health and safety and the environment prior to making a decision on whether to issue the licence. The consultation RARMP and related information can be obtained via the consultation hub at https://consultations.health.gov.au/ (search for DIR 214), or from the contacts below. Submissions should reference DIR 214 and be submitted via the hub or email by 28 April 2025.
