Invitation for Public Comment

The Australian Government is examining the case for mandating Electronic Stability Control (ESC) in light commercial vehicles and Brake Assist Systems (BAS) in light passenger vehicles and light commercial vehicles through Australian Design Rules for Motor Vehicles and Trailers (ADRs).  ESC helps drivers maintain control of their vehicle during a skid, while BAS helps drivers stop the vehicle in the quickest possible time in an emergency situation.  The ADRs are vehicle standards under the Motor Vehicle Standards Act 1989 and apply to all new vehicles.

The Department of Infrastructure and Transport which administers the Act, is inviting public comment on two draft Regulation Impact Statements (RISs) that consider the case for regulating ESC and BAS respectively.  Copies of the RISs and related documents are available from:
