EXPLANATORY STATEMENT

STATUTORY RULES 1986 NO. 1

GREAT BARRIER REEF MARINE PARK REGULATIONS (AMENDMENT)

(Issued under the authority of the Minister of State for Arts, Heritage and Environment).

The purpose of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Regulations (Amendment) is to extend the application of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Regulations to the Far Northern Section of the Marine Park. The amendments to the Regulations also define and clarify certain terms for the purposes of zoning plans and correct two incorrect references in the Regulations.

Regulation 1

Provides a commencement date for the Regulations.

Regulation 2

Formal. Provides for citation.

Regulation 3

Amends existing Regulation 4 to define “Far Northern Section” and to include a reference to the Far Northern Section in the definition of “zone”.

Regulation 4

Amends existing Regulation 6 to correct an incorrect reference and to define ‘amateur net’ and ‘drop purse seine net’ for the purposes of a zoning plan.

Regulation 5

Amends existing Regulation 13 to correct an incorrect reference.

Regulation 6 and 7

Amends Schedules 1 and 1A to the Regulations respectively to correct taxonomic identification of protected species listed in the Schedules.
