Currency Act 1965
Currency (Royal Australian Mint) Determination (No. 4) 2017
Under paragraph 13(2)(b) and subsection 13A(1) of the Currency Act 1965, the Minister for Small Business has made a determination regarding the specification of coins proposed to be issued by the Royal Australian Mint.
Paragraph 13(2)(b) and subsection 13A(1) of the Currency Act 1965 require that the determination provides details of the coins’ denomination and characteristics, including standard composition, standard weight, allowable variation from standard weight, design and dimensions. Each item in the table below explains a corresponding item in Part 1 of Schedule 1 to this determination.
Item 1 | $100 Gold Coin – Northern Sky
Reverse The design is divided into 24 equal segments by lines radiating from a central circle. The outer edge of the coin contains the inscriptions ‘0h’, ‘1h’, ‘2h’, ‘3h’, ‘4h’, ‘5h’, ‘6h’, ‘7h’, ‘8h’, ‘9h’, ‘10h’, ‘11h’, ‘12h’, ‘13h’, ‘14h’, ‘15h’, ‘16h’, 17h’, ‘18h’, ‘19h’, ‘20h’, ‘21h’, ‘22h’ and ‘23h’. The design includes dots and lines intersecting dots, fish tied together by a ribbon, a female with a band and chain on each wrist, a ram, the head of a sea monster, a giraffe, a male with a helmet and sword holding the head of Medusa, a part of a bull and a partially obscured male holding a club and shield. The design also includes 2 people holding an arrow, a lyre and a club. The design includes a cat, a bear, a crab, a lion, a partially obscured female with wings and a bearded male holding a spear, a sickle and 2 dogs by their lead. The design includes a male holding a club and a branch with leaves and apples, a dragon, a lyre, a swan, an eagle, a dolphin, a crowned male holding a sceptre and a cloak, a lizard and a part of Pegasus. Item 14 | 50c Copper and Nickel Coin – 3801 A Legend is Steam
Reverse A representation of a 38-class locomotive bearing the number ‘38’ and ‘01’, a coal cart and a passenger carriage on railway tracks. Positioned below the railway tracks there are a series of green and yellow curved stripes. The design includes a circle which is partially obscured by that locomotive and by a representation of steam emitting from that locomotive. The design also includes the inscriptions ‘3801’, ‘STEAM LOCOMOTIVE’ and ‘1943 – 2018’ and a stylised representation of the initials of the designer Adam Ball ‘AB’.

Reverse The design includes a horizontal line and a central circle. Positioned above that horizontal line, and partially obscuring that circle, is a representation of 3 poppy flowers. Below that horizontal line, and positioned inside that circle, is an ornamental pattern containing a series of metal cartridges pointing down and presented in 2 row and a series of metal cartridges pointing up and presented in a row. The design also includes a circular border, the inscriptions ‘ARMISTICE CENTENARY’, ‘1918 - 2018’and ‘ONE DOLLAR’ and the initials of the designer Aleksandra Stokic ‘AS’.

Positioned under that gum tree is a representation of a kangaroo lying on the ground and facing left and a representation of a kangaroo standing. The design includes the inscriptions ‘ONE DOLLAR’ and ‘1oz .999 Ag’ and the number ‘25’ enclosed by a square. The design also includes the initials of the designer Stevan Michael Stojanovic ‘SMS’.

Consultation
No public consultation was undertaken in relation to the currency determination. The effect of this instrument is to determine the denomination, weight, design and dimension of coins to enable the Royal Australian Mint to continue its production of circulating and numismatic coins. The Mint receives public submissions on coin designs and determines appropriate designs in accordance with its Coin Design Policy. The Mint used market based tools to identify interested parties and gauge interest in coin themes.
Commencement
The determination commences on the day after it is registered.
Statement of Compatibility with Human Rights
This instrument is compatible with the human rights and freedoms recognised or declared in the international instruments listed in section 3 of the Human Rights (Parliamentary Scrutiny) Act 2011. The purpose of the Currency (Royal Australian Mint) Determination (No. 4) 2017 is to determine the denomination, weight, design and dimension of circulating and numismatic coins. This instrument does not engage any of the applicable rights or freedoms. This instrument is compatible with human rights as it does not raise any human rights issues. This determination has been made by the Minister for Small Business, in accordance with paragraph 13(2)(b) and subsection 13A(1) of the Currency Act 1965.
