Currency Determination (Royal Australian Mint) 2005 (3)

 

 

Sub-sections 13(6) and 13A(4) of the Currency Act 1965 provided that a determination made by the Treasurer is a disallowable instrument for the purposes of Section 46A of the Acts Interpretation Act 1901 and so is subject to the same Parliamentary scrutiny that applies at present to the regulations making new coins.

 

Sub-sections 13(2)(a) and 13A (1) of the Currency Act 1965 also provide for the determination of coin characteristics ie standard composition, standard weight, allowable variation from standard weight, design and dimensions.

 

The Currency Determination (Royal Australian Mint) 2005 (3) provides for several coins as listed below:

  •         2006 $50 Tri-colour Proof coin  ( Item 1 of the determination)
  •         2006 $5 Silver Proof coin ( Item 2)
  •         2006 $5 Uncirculated coin ( Item 3)
  •         2005 $10 Silver Proof coin ( Item 4)
  •         2006 $30 One Kilo Silver coin ( Item 5)
  •         2006 $5 Masterpieces in Silver Set- consisting of four coins ( Item 6 to Item 9)
  •         2006 $1 Silver Kangaroo coin ( Item 10)
  •         2006 $1 Silver Kangaroo gold plated coin ( Item 11)

Obverse design:

An effigy of Queen Elizabeth II- a collage of floral patterns, and the inscriptions- ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA 2006 and 50 DOLLARS.

 

Reverse design:

  •          In the centre: A representation of M2006 logo in colour pad printing
  •          In the intermediate ring:  A collage of text, ‘MELBOURNE 2006’ ‘XVIII COMMONWEALTH GAMES’ ;  and
  •          In the outer ring: Pictograms of 16 Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Sports

Reverse design:  A crown and the M2006 logo at the centre, surrounded by the text: XVIII COMMONWEALTH GAMES’, and COMMONWEALTH NATIONS”.

A ring of images of the athletes representing 71 Commonwealth nations.

Item 4:  2005 $10 Silver Proof coin, commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Sydney Mint

 

Obverse design:  A gold plated circle containing the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, AUSTRALIA 2005; a gold plated plaque of the Sydney Mint., with a crown, SYDNEY MINT, AUSTRALIA, and 1855

In the centre of the design, an inscription about the opening of the Sydney Mint.

 

Reverse design:  A representation of the Sydney Mint building at the centre plated in gold, surrounded by the inscriptions: 1855-2005, SYDNEY MINT and 10 DOLLARS.

Obverse design:   An effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA 2006 and 30 DOLLARS.

 

Reverse design:  Featuring the logo of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games; a representation of the Southern Cross; and around the rim of the design, pictograms of 16 Commonwealth Games Sports, with each image depicted in a halo ring.

The set consisting of four silver proof coins, each featuring the works of one of the following artists:

  •          Sidney Nolan

Obverse design: 

 An effigy of Queen Elizabeth II surrounded by the inscriptions: “ELIZABETH II”  and  “AUSTRALIA 2006”
