Currency Act 1965

Currency (Perth Mint) Determination 2007 (No. 1)

 

Under subsection 13A(1) of the Currency Act 1965, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasurer has made a determination regarding the specifications of coins proposed to be issued by the Perth Mint.

Subsection 13A(1) of the Currency Act 1965 requires that the determination provide details of coin characteristics including standard composition, standard weight, allowable variation from standard weight, design and dimensions.

A determination made by the Treasurer is a disallowable instrument for the purposes of section 42 of the Legislative Instruments Act 2003.

This Determination covers 131 coins to be released from June 2007 to April 2008. 

Some of the coins will be dated with a year other than that of the year of minting. Gold Corporation has been directed to advise consumers of the variation between the year indicated on the coin and the year in which it was minted.

                 Silver Koala

The design for the 2008 Bullion Silver Koala (1 kilo, 10oz and 1/2oz) coins feature a representation of a mother and baby koala sitting on a branch.

                 Gilded Silver Koala

The design for the 2008 Bullion Silver Koala (1oz) coin depicts a gilded mother and baby koala sitting on a branch.

                 Gold Kangaroo

The design for the 2008 Bullion Gold Kangaroo (1oz, 1/2oz, 1/4oz, 1/10oz and 1/20oz) coins consist of a representation of a kangaroo with joey in its pouch hopping on the grass.

                 Dreamtime Series:  Kangaroo

The design for the 2008 Bullion Dreamtime Kangaroo series (1 kilo, 500 gram, 100 gram, 50 gram, 1oz, 20 gram, 10 gram, 5 gram, 2.5 gram, 2 gram and 1 gram gold coins and 1 kilo, 500 gram, 100 gram, 50 gram and 1oz silver coins) consists of a stylised representation of an adult kangaroo surrounded by patterns of circles and lines on both sides. 


                 Dreamtime Series: Turtle

The design on this 2008 Bullion Dreamtime Turtle series (1 kilo, 500 gram, 100 gram, 50 gram, 1oz, 20 gram, 10 gram, 5 gram, 2.5 gram, 2 gram and 1 gram gold coins and 1 kilo, 500 gram, 100 gram, 50 gram and 1oz silver coins) consists of a stylised representation of a turtle surrounded by patterns of circles and lines above and below.

                 Silver Mouse

The design for the 2008 Lunar Bullion Silver Mouse (1 kilo, 1/2 kilo, 10oz, 5oz, 2oz, 1oz and 1/2oz) coins incorporate a representation of a mouse standing and looking upwards.  These designs complete series 1 of the silver lunar series.

                 Silver Mouse with Diamond Eye

The design for the 2008 Lunar Bullion Silver Mouse (1 kilo) coin features a representation of a mouse with a diamond inset in an eye standing and looking upwards.  The border design incorporates a traditional Chinese pattern of bats and clouds in colour.   This design completes series 1 of the silver lunar series.

                 Gilded Silver Mouse with Bats and Clouds

The design for the 2008 Lunar Bullion Silver Mouse (1oz) coin consists of a gilded representation of a mouse standing and looking upwards.  The border design incorporates a traditional Chinese pattern of bats and clouds.  This design completes series 1 of the silver lunar series.

                 Silver Ox

The design for the 2009 Lunar Bullion Silver Ox (1 kilo, 1/2 kilo, 10oz, 5oz, 2oz, 1oz and 1/2oz) coins incorporate a representation of an ox standing and looking downwards.  These designs complete series 1 of the silver lunar series.

                 Silver Ox with Diamond Eye

The design for the 2009 Lunar Bullion Silver Ox (1 kilo) coin features a representation of an ox with a diamond inset in an eye, standing and looking downwards.  The border design incorporates a traditional Chinese pattern of bats and clouds highlighted in colour.  This design completes series 1 of the silver lunar series.

                 Silver Tiger  

The design for the 2010 Lunar Bullion Silver Tiger (1 kilo, 1/2 kilo, 10oz, 5oz, 2oz, 1oz and 1/2oz) coins incorporate a representation of a tiger standing on snow covered rocks with tufts of grass.  These designs complete series 1 of the silver lunar series. 

                 Silver Tiger With Diamond Eyes

The design for the 2010 Lunar Bullion Silver Tiger (1 kilo) coin features a representation of a tiger with a diamond inset in each eye, standing on snow covered rocks with tufts of grass.  The border design incorporates a traditional Chinese pattern of bats and clouds highlighted in colour.  This design completes series 1 of the silver lunar series.

The design for the 2008 Lunar Bullion Silver Mouse (1 kilo) coin features a representation of two mice on a bed of straw, each with a sapphire inset in an eye, with two pumpkins and vine in the background.  This coin represents the commencement of Gold Corporation’s second lunar coin series.

                 Gilded Silver Mouse

The design for the 2008 Lunar Bullion Silver Mouse (1oz) coin consists of a representation of two gilded mice on a bed of straw with two pumpkins in the background.  This coin represents the commencement of Gold Corporation’s second lunar coin series.

                 Aluminium Bronze Mouse

The design for the 2008 Lunar Mouse series (aluminium bronze) coin features a representation of two mice.  This coin represents the commencement of Gold Corporation’s second lunar coin series.

                 Gold Diamond Royal Wedding Anniversary

The design of the gold (1oz) coin commemorates the diamond wedding anniversary of HM Queen Elizabeth II and HRH the Duke of Edinburgh.  It features a coloured photograph of HM Queen Elizabeth II and HRH the Duke of Edinburgh in formal attire; a segment with a stylised representation of a cut diamond; and the inscription ‘Diamond Wedding Anniversary’ with a diamond inset in the letter ‘O’.

                 Silver Diamond Royal Wedding Anniversary

The design of the silver (1oz) coin commemorates the diamond wedding anniversary of HM Queen Elizabeth II and HRH the Duke of Edinburgh.  It features a coloured photograph of HM Queen Elizabeth II and HRH the Duke of Edinburgh in formal attire; and a segment with a stylised representation of a cut diamond; and the inscription ‘Diamond Wedding Anniversary’.

                 200th Anniversary of Rum Rebellion

The design commemorates the 200th Anniversary of the Rum Rebellion.  The Silver Holey Dollar (25.435g 0.250g) coin comprises a silver annulus with the inscriptions ‘Rum Rebellion’ and ‘1808’. 

The design on the rectangular Dump (6.0g 1.0g) coin depicts a representation of a cartoon of Bligh’s arrest.

                 220th Anniversary of the First Fleet

The design commemorates the 220th anniversary of the First Fleet.  The design of the silver (1oz) coin consists of a coloured illustration of Captain Arthur Phillip and a colour washed representation of Australia as depicted circa 1787 with the inscription ‘New Holland’.

                 Gold World Youth Day Sydney

The design of the gold (1oz) coin features a head and shoulders photograph of Pope Benedict XVI and a representation of the official World Youth Day Sydney 2008 logo.  

                 Silver World Youth Day Sydney

The design of the silver (1oz) coin features a coloured head and shoulders photograph of Pope Benedict XVI and a coloured representation of the official World Youth Day Sydney 2008 logo.

                 Aluminium bronze World Youth Day Sydney

The design of the aluminium bronze (30mm) coin features a coloured head and shoulders photograph of Pope Benedict XVI and a coloured representation of the official World Youth Day Sydney 2008 logo.

                 Proclamation Series:  One Johanna

The design on the One Johanna proclamation gold (28.77gram) coin features a reproduction of the original reverse of the One Johanna gold coin produced in Portugal for John V between 1722-1750.

                 Proclamation Series:  Half Johanna

The design on the Half Johanna proclamation gold (14.40gram) coin features a reproduction of the original reverse of the Half Johanna gold coin produced in Portugal for John V between 1722-1750.

                 Proclamation Series:  Mohur

The design on the Mohur proclamation gold (12.40gram) coin features a reproduction of the original reverse of the Mohur gold coin produced in India, Bengal Presidency 1793.

                 Proclamation Series:  One Guinea

The design on the One Guinea proclamation gold (8.40gram) coin features a reproduction of the original reverse of the 1788 One Guinea gold coin produced in Great Britain for George III between (1763-1799).

                 Proclamation Series:  Ducat

The design on the Ducat proclamation gold (3.60gram) coin features a reproduction of the original reverse of the 1781 Ducat gold coin produced in Netherlands, Province of Holland as a trade coin.

                 Proclamation Series:  Star Pagoda

The design on the Star Pagoda proclamation gold (3.40gram) coin features a reproduction of the original reverse of the Star Pagoda gold coin produced in Indian circa 1790.

                 Proclamation Series:  One Rupee

The design on the One Rupee proclamation silver (12.50gram) coin features a reproduction of the original reverse of the One Rupee silver coin produced in the Sate of Bengal, sicca Rupee 1748.

                 Proclamation Series:  Pillar Dollar

The design on the Pillar Dollar proclamation silver (28.10gram) coin features a reproduction of the original reverse of the 1742 ‘Pillar’ Dollar silver coin produced in various Spanish and New World mints for Charles III.

                 Proclamation Series:  Guilder

The design on the Guilder proclamation silver (10.80gram) coin features a reproduction of the original reverse of the 1786 Guilder silver coin produced in Netherlands, West Freisland Provence.

                 Proclamation Series:  One Shilling

The design on the One Shilling proclamation silver (6.10gram) coin features a reproduction of the original reverse of the One Shilling silver coin produced in Great Britain for George III one year issue, 1787.

                 Proclamation Series:  One Penny

The design on the One Penny proclamation base metal (29.00gram) coin features a reproduction of the original reverse of the One Penny copper coin produced in Great Britain for George III one year issue, 1797.

                 Discover Australia:  Australian Sea Lion

The design of the Discover Australia aluminium bronze coin depicts a representation of an Australian sea lion swimming with a seabed of corals and starfish underneath.


                 Discover Australia:  Common Wombat

The design of the Discover Australia aluminium bronze coin depicts a representation of a common wombat walking on rough stony ground.

                 Discover Australia:  Echidna

The design of the Discover Australia aluminium bronze coin depicts a representation of an echidna resting on leaves.

                 Discover Australia:  Frilled Neck Lizard

The design of the Discover Australia aluminium bronze coin depicts a frilled neck lizard crouching on a branch.

                 Discover Australia:  Ghost Bat

The design of the Discover Australia aluminium bronze coin depicts a representation of a ghost bat flying with scattered clouds above.

                 Discover Australia:  Green Turtle

                 50th Anniversary Of Australian Special Air Service

The design of this 2007 Aluminium Bronze coin commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Australian Special Air Service.  It features a representation of the winged dagger badge, with the inscription ‘Who dares wins, surrounded with the inscriptions 50th anniversary Australian Special Air Service 1957 – 2007.

Obverse

Consistent with all Australian legal tender coinage, an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will appear on the obverse sides of the coins.

Public consultation

No public consultation was undertaken in relation to the currency determination as it has limited public interest and the design of the coins is based on the commercial decisions by the Perth Mint.

The determination commences on the day after it is registered.
