EXPLANATORY STATEMENT
Currency Act 1965
Currency (Perth Mint) Determination 2006 (No. 2)
Under subsection 13A(1) of the Currency Act 1965, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasurer has made a determination regarding the specifications of coins proposed to be issued by the Perth Mint.
Subsections 13(2) and 13A(1) of the Currency Act 1965 requires that the determination provide details of coin characteristics including standard composition, standard weight, allowable variation from standard weight, design and dimensions.
A determination made by the Treasurer is a disallowable instrument for the purposes of section 42 of the Legislative Instruments Act 2003 (Subsections 13(6) and 13A(4) of the Currency Act 1965, section 57 of the Legislative Instruments Act 2003).
This Determination covers 67 coins to be released from August 2006 to 2018
• Red kangaroo
The design for the 2008 Gold Investor Nugget (1 kilo, 10oz and 2oz) coin features a representation of a red kangaroo.
• Two kangaroos sitting amongst grass
The design for the 2008 Gold Collector Nugget (1oz, 1/2oz, 1/4oz, 1/10oz and 1/20oz) coin features a representation of two kangaroos sitting amongst long grass.
• Koala climbing a tree
The design for the 2008 Platinum Investor Koala (1 kilo, 10oz and 2oz) coin features a representation of a koala climbing a tree.
• Two koalas on a branch
The design for the 2008 Platinum Collector Koala (1oz, 1/2oz, 1/4oz, 1/10oz and 1/20oz) coin features a representation of two koalas on a branch.
• Kookaburra standing on a wire fence
The design for the 2008 Silver Investor Kookaburra (1 kilo, 10oz and 2oz) and Silver Collector Kookaburra (1oz) coins features a representation of a kookaburra on a wire fence with a spider web.
• Koalas sitting on a branch
The design for the 2008 Silver Bullion Koala (1oz) coin features a representation of mother and baby koala sitting on a branch.
• Young koala sitting on a branch
A design for the 2009 Silver Bullion Koala (1oz) coin features a representation of a young koala sitting on a large branch.
• Gilded kookaburra on a wire fence (Variation)
A variation to 2008 Australian Silver Bullion Collector Kookaburra (1oz) features a representation of a gilded kookaburra on a wire fence with a spider web.
• 50th Anniversary of Dame Edna Everage
The design commemorates the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Dame Edna Everage character. The design on the silver (1oz) and aluminium bronze (30mm) coins depicts a jewelled pattern border enclosing a coloured head and neck photograph of Dame Edna Everage. The coin bears the inscriptions ‘Dame Edna Everage’ and ‘50th Anniversary 1956-2006’ inside the rim of the coins.
• 75th Anniversary of the death of Phar Lap
The design on this commemorative silver (1oz) coin consists of a representation of a jockey riding the race horse Phar Lap with a stylised ribbon and the inscriptions ‘75th Anniversary’ against a stylised sunburst design in the background. The coin includes the inscription ‘1932-2007’.
• 75th Anniversary of Sydney Harbour Bridge
A design commemorating the 75th Anniversary of the opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge in a gold (1/25oz) coin. The design depicts a representation of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The coin includes the inscription ‘2007 Sydney Harbour Bridge’.
• 75th Anniversary of Sydney Harbour Bridge
A design commemorating the 75th Anniversary of the opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge in a silver (1oz) coin. The design depicts a representation of the Sydney Harbour Bridge with a burst of coloured fireworks in the sky in the background. The coin includes the inscription ‘75th Anniversary 1932-2007’.
• 100th Anniversary of Australian Commonwealth Coat of Arms
A design commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the 1908 Australian Commonwealth Coat of Arms. The 1oz silver coin features a coloured representation of the 1908 and 1912 Australian Commonwealth Coats of Arms.
• Australian Antarctic Territory: Humpback Whale
The design depicts the Australian Antarctic Territory in a 1 oz silver coin. It features a representation of an icy landscape against a colour washed sky and a coloured representation of a humpback whale in the foreground, over an outline map of Antarctica.
• Australian Antarctic Territory: South Magnetic Pole
The design of this 2009 Australian Antarctic Territory (1oz) coin commemorates 100 years since the finding of the South Magnetic Pole on 16 January 1909. It features a head and shoulders representation of Sir Douglas Mawson in the foreground and a representation of two explorers against a colour washed background, over an outline map of Antarctica.
• Treasures of Australia Locket Coin: Sapphires
The design on the 2007 Treasures of Australia Locket Gold (1oz) and Silver (1oz) coins consists of a transparent half circle capsule at the lower half of the coin, holding small loose sapphires, surrounded by a stylised representation of the typical terrain where sapphires are found.
• Treasures of Australia Locket Coin: Opals
The design on the 2008 Treasures of Australia Locket Gold (1oz) and Silver (1oz) coins consists of a transparent half circle capsule at the lower half of the coin, holding small loose opals, surrounded by a stylised representation of the typical terrain where opals are found.
• Treasures of Australia Locket Coin: Diamonds
The design on the 2009 Treasures of Australia Locket Gold (1oz) and Silver (1oz) coins features a transparent half circle capsule at the lower half of the coin, holding small loose diamonds, surrounded by a stylised representation of the typical terrain where diamonds are found.
• Treasures of Australia Locket Coin: Gold Pieces
The design on the 2010 Treasures of Australia Locket Gold (1oz) and Silver (1oz) coins features a transparent half circle capsule at the lower half of the coin, holding small loose gold pieces, surrounded by a stylised representation of the typical terrain where gold is found.
• Treasures of Australia Locket Coin: Pearls
The design on the 2011 Treasures of Australia Locket Gold (1oz) and Silver (1oz) coins features a transparent half circle capsule at the lower half of the coin, holding small loose pearls, surrounded by a stylised representation of the typical terrain where pearls are found.
• Silver Lenticular Pig
The design for the 2007 Lunar Proof Silver Lenticular Pig (1oz) coin consisting of a stylised bamboo fencing with the Chinese characters meaning ‘well fed and abundance’ at the top and the Chinese character for ‘pig’ at the bottom. This surrounds a lenticular disc with 24 coloured individual photographic frames of a young pig against a background representing a mountainous landscape property. The lenticular disk is similar in shape to a lens and operates in much the same way as a holographic image does in that as the coin is moved the image of the young pig will move from the right corner of the coin to the centre left.
• Lunar Holey Dollar and Dump Coins (Chinese lunar animals and characters)
The 2007 Lunar Proof Silver Holey Dollar (0.8178oz) coin comprises a silver, ring-shaped coin and a design consisting of twelve equal parts each divided by a line enclosing a representation of a Chinese lunar animal in each part namely: mouse, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig.
The design on the gold-plated circular Dump (0.19oz) coin depicts the inscriptions ‘LUNAR NEW YEAR 2007’ and ‘GOOD FORTUNE & PROSPERITY’ surrounding the Chinese characters meaning ‘Happy New Year’.
• Gold Mouse
A design for the 2008 Bullion Gold Lunar Mouse (1oz) coin features a representation of two mice beside a burning oil stand.
• Silver Mouse
A design for the 2008 Bullion Silver Lunar Mouse (1oz) coin features a representation of two mice beside a large patterned vase of flora.
• Gold Ox
A design for the 2009 Bullion Gold Lunar Ox (1oz) coin features a representation of a large ox with two curved horns.
• Silver Ox
A design for the 2009 Bullion Silver Lunar Ox (1oz) coin features a representation of a large ox standing in front of a leafy plant.
• Gold Tiger
A design for the 2010 Bullion Gold Lunar Tiger (1oz) coin features a representation of a tiger lying on grass.
• Silver Tiger
A design for the 2010 Bullion Silver Lunar Tiger (1oz) coin features a representation of a tiger amongst leafy tree branches.
• Gold Rabbit
A design for the 2011 Bullion Gold Lunar Rabbit (1oz) coin features a representation of two rabbits sitting on grass.

A design for the 2011 Bullion Silver Lunar Rabbit (1oz) coin features a representation of two rabbits beside floral leafy branches.

A design for the 2012 Bullion Gold Lunar Dragon (1oz) coin features a representation of a coiled dragon with pattern representing clouds and a fire ball.
• Silver Dragon
A design for the 2012 Bullion Silver Lunar Dragon (1oz) coin features a representation of a dragon with a fire ball in the centre.
• Gold Snake
A design for the 2013 Bullion Gold Lunar Snake (1oz) coin features a representation of a coiled snake with extended forked tongue.
• Silver Snake
A design for the 2013 Bullion Silver Lunar Snake (1oz) coin features a representation of a snake coiled around a branch.
• Gold Horse
A design for the 2014 Bullion Gold Lunar Horse (1oz) coin features a representation of a horse with short grass underfoot.
• Silver Horse
A design for the 2014 Bullion Silver Lunar Horse (1oz) coin features a representation of a horse with grass in the background .
• Gold Goat
A design for the 2015 Bullion Gold Lunar Goat (1oz) coin features a representation of a goat with curved horns standing on grass.

• Gold Monkey
A design for the 2016 Bullion Gold Lunar Monkey (1oz) coin features a representation of two monkeys on leafy branches.

A design for the 2017 Bullion Gold Lunar Rooster (1oz) coin features a representation of a rooster with grass and flowers.

• Gold Dog (Rottweiler)
A design for the 2018 Bullion Gold Lunar Dog (1oz) coin features a representation of a Rottweiler standing on grass.
• Silver Dog (King Charles Spaniel)
A design for the 2018 Bullion Silver Lunar Dog (1oz) coin features a representation of a King Charles Spaniel in front of a flowering plant.
• Gold Pig
A design for the 2019 Bullion Gold Lunar Pig (1oz) coin features a representation of a pig standing on muddy ground.
• Silver Pig
A design for the 2019 Bullion Silver Lunar Pig (1oz) coin features a representation of a pig on flowering grass and stones.
Obverse
Consistent with all Australian legal tender coinage, an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will appear on the obverse sides of the coins.
Public consultation
No public consultation was undertaken in relation to the currency determination as it has limited public interest and the design of the coins is based on the commercial decisions by the Perth Mint.
The determination commences on the day after it is registered.
