EXPLANATORY STATEMENT
Currency Act 1965
Currency (Perth Mint) Determination 2006 (No. 1)
Under subsection 13A(1) of the Currency Act 1965, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasurer has made a determination regarding the specifications of coins proposed to be issued by the Perth Mint.
Subsection 13A(1) of the Currency Act 1965 requires that the determination provide details of coin characteristics including standard composition, standard weight, allowable variation from standard weight, design and dimensions.
A determination made by the Treasurer is a disallowable instrument for the purposes of section 42 of the Legislative Instruments Act 2003 (Subsections 13(6) and 13A(4) of the Currency Act 1965, section 57 of the Legislative Instruments Act 2003).
This Determination covers 48 coins to be released from May to November 2006.
Some of the coins will be dated with a year other than that of the year of minting. Gold Corporation has been directed to advise consumers of the variation between the year indicated on the coin and the year in which it was minted.

A design for the 2007 Lunar Proof Gold Pig (1oz, 1/2oz, 1/4oz 1/10oz and 1/20oz) coin features a representation of a pig standing on soil amongst five mushrooms.
• Gold Pig
A design for the 2007 Lunar Bullion Gold Pig (1 kilo, 10oz, 2oz, 1oz, 1/2oz, 1/4oz 1/10oz and 1/20oz) coin features a representation of a piglet standing on wet rocks amongst grass.
• Gold Pig with Bats and Clouds
A design for the 2007 Lunar Bullion Gold Pig (10 kilo) coin features a representation of a piglet standing on wet rocks amongst grass. The border design incorporates a traditional Chinese pattern of bats and clouds.
• Coloured Gold Pig
A design for the 2007 Lunar Bullion Gold Pig (1oz, 1/2oz, 1/4oz 1/10oz and 1/20oz) coin consists of a coloured representation of a piglet standing on wet rocks amongst grass.
• Silver Pig
A design for the 2007 Lunar Proof Silver Pig (1 kilo, 10oz, 2oz, 1oz and 1/2oz) coin features a representation of a pig standing on a flowerbed.
• Silver Pig
A design for the 2007 Lunar Bullion Silver Pig (1 kilo, 1/2 kilo, 10oz, 5oz, 2oz, 1oz and 1/2oz) coin incorporates a representation of a piglet standing on leaves.
• Silver Pig with Bats and Clouds
A design for the 2007 Lunar Bullion Silver Pig (10 kilo) coin features a representation of a piglet standing on leaves. The border design incorporates a traditional Chinese pattern of bats and clouds.
• Coloured Silver Pig with Bats and Clouds
A design for the 2007 Lunar Bullion Silver Pig (1 kilo, 1/2 kilo, 10oz, 5oz, 2oz, 1oz and 1/2oz) coin features a representation of a coloured piglet standing on coloured leaves. The border design incorporates a traditional Chinese pattern of bats and clouds.
• Silver Pig with Diamond Eye
A design for the 2007 Lunar Bullion Silver Pig (1 kilo) coin features a representation of a piglet with a diamond inset in an eye, standing on leaves. The border design incorporates a traditional Chinese pattern of bats and clouds highlighted in colour.
• Gilded Silver Pig with Bats and Clouds
A design for the 2007 Lunar Bullion Silver Pig (1oz) coin consists of a gilded representation of a piglet standing on leaves. The border design incorporates a traditional Chinese pattern of bats and clouds.
• Aluminium Bronze Pig
A design for the 2007 Lunar Pig series (aluminium bronze) coin features a representation of a pig standing on cobblestones against a background of a pagoda and a tree on top of a hill.
• Bullion Gold Nugget With ‘M7’ Privy Mark
A new design for the 2006 Bullion Australian Nugget series that incorporates a circular ‘M7’ privy mark on the 1/4oz gold coin. The coin will become part of the ‘Magnificent 7’ collection, which includes six other popular gold coins produced by other international mints.
• 50th Anniversary Of Australian Television
The design commemorates the 50th anniversary of Australian television. The design of the silver (1oz) coin features a representation of an early television set screen. Six images, each depicting an image of a favourite television show over the past 50 years, are presented as lenticular images on the screen. The images are Graham Kennedy in Straw Boater in ‘Graham Kennedy’, ‘Countdown’ Logo, Daryl and Ossie in ‘Hey Hey It’s Saturday’, ‘Playschool’ logo, Sonny cuddling Skippy in ‘Skippy The Bush Kangaroo’ and ‘The Movie Show’ logo.
• Australian Antarctic Territory: Davis Station
The design of this 2007 Australian Antarctic Territory (1oz) coin commemorates 50 years since the naming ceremony to officially open the new Davis Station held on 13 January 1957. The coin depicts a coloured representation of Davis Station on the horizon against a colour washed sky and a partially coloured representation of the ice-breaker Kista Dan cutting through ice. All superimposed on the outline map of Antarctica.
• Silver Koala holding on to a Branch
The design on this Bullion Silver Koala (1oz) coin features a representation of a koala holding on to a branch.
• Pre-Decimal Square Locket
The design of the silver (1oz) coin features a square transparent capsule holding six miniature replicas of the Australian pre-decimal coins. The replicas include the 1923 one penny; the 1911 sixpence, one half penny, one shilling and threepence; and the 1916 one florin — two shillings, all with the effigy of King George V on the obverse of the coin. The design incorporates an outer border with pattern of triangles enclosing the inscription and a representation of the Coat of Arms, and an inner border with stylised patterns.
• Australia-Japan Year Of Exchange
The design of this coin commemorates the Australia-Japan Year of Exchange. The bullion silver (1oz) coin features a circular pattern of small kangaroos surrounding a large hopping kangaroo and the Australia-Japan Year of Exchange logo in colour.
Obverse
Consistent with all Australian legal tender coinage, an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will appear on the obverse sides of the coins.
Public consultation
No public consultation was undertaken in relation to the currency determination as it has limited public interest and the design of the coins is based on the commercial decisions by the Perth Mint.
The determination commences on the day after it is registered.
