EXPLANATORY STATEMENT
Currency Act 1965
Currency (Perth Mint) Determination 2005 (No. 2)
Under subsection 13A(1) of the Currency Act 1965, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasurer has made a determination regarding the specifications of precious coins proposed to be issued by the Perth Mint.
Subsections 13(2) and 13A(1) of the Currency Act 1965 require that the determination provide details of coin characteristics including standard composition, standard weight, allowable variation from standard weight, design and dimensions.
Subsections 13(6) and 13A(4) of the Currency Act 1965 provide that a determination made by the Treasurer is a disallowable instrument for the purposes of section 42 of the Legislative Instruments Act 2003.
This Determination comprises the Perth Mint’s Annual Coin Submission for 47 coins to be released from July 2005 to January 2006.
Some of the coins will be dated with a year other than that of the year of minting. Gold Corporation has been directed to advise consumers of the variation between the year indicated on the coin and the year in which it was minted.
• Gold Dog (Chow)
A design for the 2006 Proof Gold Lunar 1 oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz, 1/10 oz and 1/20 oz coins, featuring a representation of a Chow.
• Gold Dog (Beagle)
A design for the 2006 Bullion Gold Lunar 1 Kilo, 10 oz, 2 oz, 1 oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz, 1/10 oz and 1/20 oz coins, featuring a representation of a Beagle standing on a patch of grass.
• Gold Dog (Beagle) with Bats and Clouds (new additional size)
A new size has been added to the existing Bullion Gold range for the 2006 Bullion Gold Lunar — 10 Kilo coin — featuring a Beagle standing on a patch of grass. The border design incorporates a traditional Chinese pattern, with the bats and clouds.
• Coloured Dog (Beagle)
A design, incorporating colour, for the 2006 Bullion Gold Lunar 1 oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz,
1/10 oz and 1/20 oz coins. The design depicts a Beagle standing on a patch of grass.
• Silver Dog (Golden Retriever)
A design for the 2006 Lunar Proof Silver 1 Kilo, 10 oz, 2 oz, 1 oz, and ½ oz coins featuring a Golden Retriever.
• Silver Dog (German Shepherd)
A design for the 2006 Lunar Bullion Silver 1 Kilo, ½ Kilo, 10 oz, 5 oz, 2 oz, 1 oz, and ½ oz coins featuring a German Shepherd dog sitting on grass and rocks.
• Silver Dog (German Shepherd) with Bats and Clouds (new additional size)

A design, incorporating colour, for the 2006 Lunar Bullion Silver 1 Kilo, ½ Kilo, 10 oz, 5 oz, 2 oz, 1 oz and ½ oz coins. The design image features a representation of a German Shepherd sitting on grass and rocks. The border design incorporates a traditional Chinese pattern representing bats and clouds.
• Silver Dog (German Shepherd) with Bats and Clouds (variations)
Two variations have been included to the Lunar Bullion Silver series to include a 1 Kilo coin that features a representation of a German Shepherd with diamond eye sitting on grass and rocks with a traditional Chinese pattern representing bats and clouds in colour and a 1 oz coin that consists of a gilded representation of a German Shepherd sitting on grass and rocks and a traditional Chinese pattern representing bats and clouds.
• Aluminium Bronze Dog (German Shepherd)
A 30.00 mm Aluminium Bronze design that features a representation of a German Shepherd laying down against a landscape background.
• 50th Anniversary of Cocos (Keeling) Islands
A design commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands becoming Australian territory on 23 November 1955 in a 1 oz silver coin. The design features a coloured representation of a red-footed booby bird perched on a leafy Pisonia branch with a colour‑washed beach landscape with Cocos palms in the background.
• 100th Anniversary of the PGA Championship
A Professional Golfers Association (PGA) authorised coin to commemorate the 100th year of the PGA championship in a 1 oz silver coin. The design features a coloured image of a golfer swinging his club and the PGA Centenary logo against a stylised golf ball background.
• 400th Anniversary of Australia on the Map
A design to commemorate the arrival of the Dutch vessel Duyfken and the landing of its crew in Australia — the first documented contact between Australia and the rest of the world. The 1 oz silver coin features a coloured representation of part of the original map of Australia and the Duyfken at sea with a stylised representation of a compass.
• Aluminium Bronze Kangaroo
A 38.74 mm Aluminium Bronze design that features an illustration of a young kangaroo surrounded by land formation depicting ‘new beginnings’.
• HRH Prince Henry Of Wales 21st Birthday
A design to commemorate the 21st birthday of HRH Prince Henry of Wales, in a 1 oz silver coin. It features a coloured head and shoulders image of the Prince against a coloured background and a representation of the full coat of arms of HRH Prince Henry of Wales.
Obverse
Consistent with all Australian legal tender coinage, an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will appear on the obverse sides of the coins.
Public consultation
No public consultation was undertaken in relation to the currency determination as it has limited public interest and the design of the coins is based on the commercial decisions by the Perth Mint.
The determination commences on the day after it is registered.
