Currency (Perth Mint) Determination 2005 (No. 1)
Under subsection 13A(1) of the Currency Act 1965, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasurer has made a determination regarding the specifications of coins proposed to be issued by the Perth Mint.
Subsections 13(2) and 13A(1) of the Currency Act 1965 require that the determination provide details of coin characteristics including standard composition, standard weight, allowable variation from standard weight, design and dimensions.
Subsections 13(6) and 13A(4) of the Currency Act 1965 provide that a determination made by the Treasurer is a disallowable instrument for the purposes of section 46A of the Acts Interpretation Act 1901.
The Currency (Perth Mint) Determination 2004 (No. 3) Amendment Determination 2005 (No. 1) provides for an amendment to schedule 1, section 3, item 13 of Currency (Perth Mint) Determination 2004 (No. 3) to include on the obverse ‘Australia 2005’ rather than ‘Australia’.
Currency (Perth Mint) Determination 2005 (No. 1) provides for a total of six coins commemorating:
• 90th Anniversary of the first Australian and New Zealand Army Corps;
• 100th Anniversary of the establishment of Rotary International; and
• 60th Anniversary of the end of World War II.
The specifications are summarised below.
• Australian and New Zealand Army Corps: 90th anniversary - 1/4oz gold
A design to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the first Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. The image for the 1/4oz gold coin features a representation of a slouch hat resting on a rifle beside a bayonet inserted in the soil with a background showing names of soldiers killed during the war. This is planned for a January 2005 release to coincide with equivalent coins being issued by New Zealand.
• Australian and New Zealand Army Corps: 90th anniversary – 1oz silver
A design to commemorate the 90th anniversary of first Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. The image for the 1oz silver coin features a representation of five Australian and New Zealand soldiers in the foreground and a coloured Australian flag in the background. This is planned for a January 2005 release to coincide with equivalent coins being issued by New Zealand.
• Australian and New Zealand Army Corps: 90th anniversary – base metal
A design to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the first Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. The image for the aluminium bronze coin features a representation of an Australian soldier in uniform, wearing ammunition pouches and carrying a rifle superimposed on a representation of the Anzac Cove. This is planned for a January 2005 release to coincide with equivalent coins being issued by New Zealand.
• 100 Years of the establishment of Rotary
A design, approved by Rotary International, to commemorate its one hundred years of service. The image for the 1oz silver coin features a Rotary International logo, superimposed on a starburst background with a banner and a band of stylised people holding hands. This is planned for a February 2005 release.
• 60th Anniversary of the End of World War II, featuring lenticular images of a dancing man
A design to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II, featuring a copyright-approved newsreel presented as a lenticular image insert on both a 1oz pure gold coin and 1oz pure silver coin. The lenticular image shows a man tipping his hat while dancing down a street with streamers to celebrate the end of World War II. It is planned for a March 2005 release.
Obverse
Consistent with all Australian legal tender coinage, an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will appear on the obverse sides of the coins.
Each determination commences on the day after it is registered.
