Under subsection 13A (1) of the Currency Act 1965, the Assistant Treasurer has made a determination regarding the specification of coins proposed to be issued by the Royal Australian Mint (RAM).
Subsection 13A (1) of the Currency Act 1965 requires that the determination provides details of the coins’ characteristics, including standard composition, standard weight, allowable variation from standard weight, design and dimensions.
This determination is a legislative instrument for the purposes of section 42 of the Legislative Instruments Act 2003.
Currency (Royal Australian Mint) Determination 2007 (No.3)
- On 17 May 2007 Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasurer approved the design and issue price for the $25 gold proof Kangaroo at Sunset coin.
- This coin has now become an annual release for the Royal Australian Mint (RAM) and therefore the date on the obverse of the coin will be updated yearly.
- Currency Determination 2007 (No.3), which relates to this coin, changes the description for the year of issue on the obverse design from specifying the year ‘2007’ to specifying the year of issue so that the design will be able to cover the release of the coin in any year.
Currency (Royal Australian Mint) Determination 2009 (No.2)
- On 3 April 2009 Minister for Superannuation and Corporate Law approved the designs and issue price for the Air Series $1 Aluminium/Bronze Crimson Rosella, Sacred Kingfisher, Major Mitchell Cockatoo and Kookaburra pad printed coins.
- Due to technical reasons with the RAM’s pad printing facilities, the coin’s releases in 2009 were postponed.
- These coins are now scheduled for release throughout 2011 and the dates on obverse of the coins have been updated accordingly.
- Currency Determination 2009 (No.2), which relates to these coins, changes the description for the year of issue on the obverse design from specifying the year ‘2009’ for the Crimson Rosella coin and the year ‘2010’ for the other coins to specifying the year of issue so that the design will be able to cover the release of the coins in any year.
Currency (Royal Australian Mint) Determination 2009 (No.9)
- On 18 December 2009 Assistant Treasurer approved the design and issue price for the $1 silver proof Kangaroo at Sunset coin.
- This coin has now become an annual release for the RAM and therefore the date on the obverse of the coin will be updated yearly.
- Currency Determination 2009 (No.9), which relates to this coin, changes the description for the year of issue on the obverse design from specifying the year ‘2008’ to specifying the year of issue so that the design will be able to cover the release of the coin in any year.
Currency (Royal Australian Mint) Determination 2010 (No.2)
- On 15 March 2010 Assistant Treasurer approved the design for the $1 silver frosted uncirculated, $1 silver proof and $10 gold proof Allied rock wallabies coins.
- At the time of making, the designer’s initial was not an element of the reverse design, however these initials had been included during the modelling of the plaster and will now be part of the coin’s design.
- Currency Determination 2010 (No.2), which relates to this coin, changes the description of the obverse design to incorporate the initials of the designer Wojciech Pietranik ‘WP’.
Currency (Royal Australian Mint) Determination 2010 (No.4)
- On 16 August 2010 Assistant Treasurer approved the design for the $10 gold proof Ram’s Head Dollar coin.
- At the time of making, a reference to the coin’s metal content was not an element of the design, however these specifications had been included during the modelling of the plaster and will now be part of the coin’s design.
- Currency Determination 2010 (No.4), which relates to this coin, changes the description of the obverse design to incorporate the coins metal content of ‘1/10 oz.9999Au’.
Consultation
No public consultation was undertaken in relation to the currency determination. The Mint receives public submissions on coin designs and determines appropriate designs in accordance with its Coin Design Policy. The Mint used market based tools to identify interested parties and gauge interest in coin themes.
Commencement
The amendments in the Schedules to this Determination are expressed as having commenced on the commencement dates of the respective principal determinations. The purpose of the retrospective commencements is to standardise the descriptions of these coin designs from the earliest opportunity. Coins will now be issued in accordance with the revised designs.
The amendments do not affect the rights of a person so as to disadvantage that person or impose any liabilities in respect of anything done or omitted to be done before the date of registration.
