THE TERRITORY OF CHRISTMAS ISLAND

No. 3 of 1971

AN ORDINANCE

To amend the Census Ordinance 1961-1966.

I, THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL in and over the Commonwealth of Australia, acting with the advice of the Federal Executive Council, hereby make the following Ordinance under the Christmas Island Act 1958-1966.

CENSUS ORDINANCE 1971.

Short title and citation.

1.—(1.) This Ordinance may be cited as the Census Ordinance 1971.[*]

(2.) The Census Ordinance 1961-1966[†] is in this Ordinance referred to as the Principal Ordinance.

(3.) The Principal Ordinance, as amended by this Ordinance, may be cited as the Census Ordinance 1961-1971.

2. Section 6 of the Principal Ordinance is repealed and the following section inserted in its stead:—

Taking of the Census.

“6. The Census shall be taken in the year One thousand nine hundred and seventy-one.”.

Householder’s Schedule.

3. Section 13 of the Principal Ordinance is amended by omitting sub-sections (2.) and (3.) and inserting in their stead the following sub-sections:—

“(2.) For the purposes of the last preceding sub-section, the matters in relation to a dwelling are—

(a) the class of dwelling, that is to say, whether the dwelling is a house, flat, community block or other class of habitation;

(b) the date of construction of the dwelling;

(c) the number of rooms in the dwelling; and

(d) the number of bedrooms in the dwelling.


“(3.) For the purposes of sub-section (1.) of this section, the particulars in relation to a person are—

(a) the name of the person;

(b) the relation of the person to the head of the household of the dwelling in which the person is residing;

(c) the sex of the person;

(d) the age of the person on the Census day;

(e) whether the person is or has been married;

(f) in the case of a person whose marriage is existing on the Census day—whether the person is permanently separated, whether legally or otherwise, from the person’s spouse;

(g) the place at which the person was born;

(h) in the case of a person who was not born in the Territory—the period during which he has resided in the Territory;

(i) the citizenship of the person;

(j) the person’s racial descent;

(k) the religion of the person;

(l) the principal activity engaged in by the person;

(m) whether the person is, on the Census day, a full-time student at a school;

(n) in the case of a person who, before the Census day, has ceased to be a full-time student at a school—the person’s age when he ceased to attend school as a full-time student; and

(o) in the case of a person who has attained the age of fifteen years—

(i) the qualifications or training of the person for a profession or occupation, whether or not the person is engaged in that profession or occupation on the Census day; and

(ii) the person’s employment.

“(4.) For the purpose of sub-section (2.) of this section, where a dwelling consists of one room only or is an apartment that consists of one room only, whether or not it is a room of a kind known as a bed-sitting room, the dwelling shall be deemed not to contain a bedroom.”.
