Objectives

 

To provide specific guidance and rules regarding the use of AMC computing facilities by staff and students.

 

Policy Statement

 

Users of all computing systems at the AMC are bound by the following ethics guidelines and rules.  A copy of these guidelines and rules will be made available to all staff and students who, in turn, are required to read and understand them prior to signing the agreement attached to this policy.

 

The AMC provides a high quality, computing environment for staff and students and requires that ethical standards in usage are observed at all times.  This policy applies to all students and staff and governs the use of AMC owned computing facilities, including servers, desktops, laptops, printers, plotters and all other associated equipment.  Penalties for breaches of ethics guidelines and rules range from immediate loss of computing privileges to suspension or expulsion from the AMC.  In addition, any person found breaching these guidelines and rules might be liable for civil or criminal prosecution under State and Federal laws or the Telecommunications Act 1997.

 

The AMC reserves the right to monitor computer activities for evidence of any breaches to these guidelines and rules.

Guidelines and Rules

 

  1. Software owned or licensed by the AMC is only available for use on AMC equipment.  It is illegal to copy onto any media, any such software and staff and students agree not to participate in such unlawful activity. AMC staff and students do not have the right to reproduce or copy computer software or its related documentation and computer software can only be used in accordance with license agreements.
  2. Federal Copyright Law including copyright obligations on electronic information and computer software is not to be violated.  Software and related materials protected by copyright law, licenses or other contracts may not be pirated, resold or otherwise infringed.
  3. Except where copying is legally permissible or for allowable evaluation purposes,  staff and students will not copy on to AMC storage systems any software licensed to other individuals, institutions or companies.

 

Information Technology Services will not provide support to users of illegally copied software and will immediately remove the offending software from AMC computers

 

4.       Staff and students are not to attempt to access areas of any systems for which authority has not been granted or to gain an unfair academic advantage through misuse of AMC systems.

5.       Staff and students will maintain system security at all times and immediately report any security breaches to the Manager Information Services - ext. 4771. This refers to all aspects of system security including, but not limited to, the physical security of computing equipment, folders and files particularly in common areas, and to the logical integrity of any of the AMC 's computer systems.

6.       Staff and students are not to share passwords and are to take reasonable precautions to protect passwords against discovery by a third party.

7.       There is to be no attempt to interfere with the operation of any computing facilities by tampering with any computers, attaching unauthorised peripheral or network devices or causing malicious damage such as the intentional distribution of computer viruses.

8.       Computing facilities are not to be used in a manner, which is likely to harass, abuse, defame or otherwise offend other persons, or for any obscene, vulgar or illegal purpose, particularly by means of Email.

9.       The hardware and software owned by the AMC is provided for the purpose of education and the use of the facilities for private consulting or personal gain is expressly forbidden.

10.   IT equipment borrowed from the AMC for authorised use is to be promptly returned when requested.

11.   Student ID cards are to be carried at all times whenever using AMC computer labs.  AMC staff have the right to ask students to display this card when required.  Students will immediately vacate any AMC computer lab when directed by authorised personnel for any breach of these guidelines.

12.   Staff and students will not continue to access any computing facilities when no longer eligible.

13.   AMC computer facilities may only be utilised for tasks relevant to AMC work or AMC study.

14.   Staff and students will not download, distribute or create any literature or image which could be considered as ‘pornographic’ or that could be used to harm others or the AMC in any way.

15.   Food or drink is not to be consumed in any computer labs or near any AMC computer equipment, including simulators.

16.   AMC reserves the right to exclude incoming mail from unsolicited free email sites if deemed that any internal or external group is misusing these facilities or if they are a duplication of AMC provided services. Where a breach of these Ethics Guidelines & Rules can be shown to have occurred, disciplinary action may be taken by the person-in-charge of a facility or the Registrar as appropriate.

Information for Students

 

 Whilst all care is taken with staff data residing on AMC servers, please be aware that it is backed up each 24 hour on weekdays and, therefore, that each student is responsible to save back-up copies of their data. If server data is lost, call IS immediately (4399) as the data MAY be recoverable on the day of deletion.

You will be required to change your password the first time you log into the AMC’s network. Please choose a password that you will remember and one that is not too common.

 

Examples of  bad passwords …

 

  • Your username (number)
  • Simple words like “cat” “dog” etc.
  • Just a number like your student ID number

 

Examples of good passwords …

 

  • An obscure word and a number – CuppaCoffee43, guMTree21 etc.

 

Students returning after an absence of 6 months or longer will use the same login number used during previous attendance.  Please contact the IS Help desk on 4399 to have your account enabled.  You will need to provide identification.
