Volkswagen Derivative Piston Engines
AD/VW/1 Assurance Inspection 8/88
Applicability: All non-type certificated Volkswagen derivative engines.
Requirement: 1. Prior to assembly for installation in an aircraft, engine is to be inspected by a person approved for the purpose by the Secretary;
2. All engine components are to be inspected in accordance with data approved by the Secretary;
3. Unless previously accomplished, carry out a magnetic particle inspection on the crankshaft, connecting rod bolts;
4. Engine is to be assembled and tested in accordance with data approved by the Secretary, by a person approved for the purpose by the Secretary;
5. Engine is to be permanently identified with a serial number which includes the identity of the engine builder or manufacturer; and
6. Engine serial number and compliance with this Directive is to be endorsed in the engine log book.
Compliance: Unless previously accomplished:
- Engines with zero time since new or overhaul - Before installations in an aircraft.
2. Engines with time since new or overhaul and removed from an aircraft for the purpose of major maintenance - Before installations in an aircraft.
3. Engines with time since new or overhaul and removed from an aircraft for the purpose of installation in another aircraft- Before installation in an aircraft.
Note: For the purpose of this Directive, major maintenance is defined d as any maintenance which involves the disassembly of the crankcase assembly.
