AD/SF340/71 Engine Control Quadrant - Inspection of

Flight Idle Stop Solenoid Bracket Screw

Applicability: Engine Control Quadrants fitted to SAAB Model SF340A aircraft serial numbers 004 through 159 and SAAB Model 340B aircraft, serial numbers 160 through 459.

Control Quadrants with the following part number and reference letters are NOT applicable:

Requirement: 1. Inspect two screws in the Control Quadrant as specified in SAAB Service Bulletin SAAB 340-76-043 dated 02 July 1999.

 

2. Replace the Engine Control Quadrant with a serviceable, modified item.

 

Note: LFV Airworthiness Directive 1-143 dated 02 July 1999 refers.

 

Compliance: 1. Within 800 flight hours of the effective date of this Directive and thereafter every 800 flight hours (if no fault found).

 

2. Either, when loose screws are found during the inspection at 1. above, or, within 8000 flight hours, or six years, whichever is the sooner, after the effective date of this Directive.

 

Fitment of a serviceable modified control quadrant is closing action for this Directive. This Airworthiness Directive becomes effective on 9 September 1999.

Background: An operator has reported a problem with the LH Power Lever binding and not going into reverse after landing. The investigation showed that a screw had backed out of a cam and caused binding within the Control Quadrant. Locking compound had not been applied during installation and it was subsequently discovered that another screw in the assembly was also missing locking compound. Loose screws could cause the power levers to become restricted in movement aft of Flight Idle and the Flight Idle Stop will malfunction.
