2. Within one week from date of replacement/re-installation.

Note: Incorporation of SAAB AB Modification No 2936 (SB SAAB 340-33-048) provides optional terminating action for the Requirement 2 repetitive inspections.

This amendment becomes effective on 3 December 1998.

Background: The Swedish Aviation Safety Department has advised that a number of instances of fluorescent lamp holders charring resulting in smoke emission due to incorrect installation of the fluorescent lamp in its holder have been reported. The original issue of this directive (SAAB SB 340-33-040) modifying the PAGE lamp holders with retainer clips only addressed part of the problem. Correct mounting of the fluorescent lamps is essential to prevent poor electrical contact that can cause arcing between the lamp and the lamp holder. Arcing can occur with both the PAGE and BRUCE lamp holders.

To minimise the risk of further incidents it is necessary to perform inspections ensuring correct mounting of the lamps after replacement. This is an ongoing requirement until a solution is developed and released by the manufacturer.

Amendment 2 increases the serial number range of affected aircraft and introduces an optional terminating action for the repetitive inspection following replacement or reinstallation of the fluorescent lamps.

Amendment 1 of this Airworthiness Directive became effective on 14 August 1997.

The original issue of this Airworthiness Directive became effective on 30 January 1997.
