Main Landing Gear Forward Side Brace 3/88

Applicability: All models PA-42 series aircraft listed in the Requirement document.

Requirement: Inspect and retire main landing gear forward side braces in accordance with Piper Service Bulletin 841A.

Compliance: Inspect main landing gear forward side braces prior to exceeding 500 hours component time in service and thereafter at intervals not exceeding 50 hours component time in service.

This inspection is also required whenever the landing gear is operated at speeds above the maximum landing gear operating speed as specified in the applicable Aircraft Flight Manual.

Retire main landing gear forward side braces P/N 57448-02/-03 upon the accumulation of 800 hours component time in service.

Note: The incorporation of new improved MLG forward side brace P/N 85165-02/- 03 constitutes terminating action for the inspection and retirement requirements of this AD.

Background: Cracking has been experienced in the main landing gear foward side braces. Failure of a brace could cause landing gear collapse. This amendment reflects the manufacturer’s announcement of the availability of an improved MLG side brace.
