Aft Centre of Gravity Restriction 7/91

 

Applicability: All PA 28-161 and PA 28-181 listed by Serial No in Piper SB No 916B except those which have incorporated AD/PA-28/88 Amdt 2.

 

Requirement: 1. Align wing tips in accordance with a CAA approved Engineering Order; or

 

Note: NAVAIR MAINTENANCE Engineering Order No 191 is approved by the CAA for this purpose. (Telephone 02-7900942).

 

Alternatively, install stall strips in accordance with Piper SB No 916B and check that the aircraft has improved stall handling characteristics.

 

Note: Either of these actions terminates the necessity for a temporary aft centre of gravity restriction.

 

2. Remove cockpit placard and any temporary Flight Manual amendment restricting the aft centre of gravity limit.

 

Compliance: Not later than 1 September 1991.

 

Background: Piper Aircraft Corporation has learned that PA 28 aircraft identified in Piper SB No 916B may exhibit an undesirable tendency to roll to the right just before and/or during the stall. This may result in a bank angle up to 60º. Initial issue of this Directive imposed a temporary aft centre of gravity restriction which was superseded by the requirement for wing stall strips.
