Piper PA-23 (Apache and Aztec) Series Aeroplanes

Amdt 1
Empennage - Inspection 8/71
Applicability: Models PA23 and PA160 with S/Nos. -231 to 23-1267.
Requirement: 1. Remove the tail cone, covers and fairing and visually inspect the elevator butt ribs and doubler plates and all castings listed below for cracks.

Note: All the forged parts listed have integral raised digit numbers therefore absence of raised digits will serve to identify the part as a casting.
2. Remove all castings listed in Para. 1 from the aircraft, clean thoroughly removing all paint, and inspect for cracks using an approved fluorescent or dye penetrant method. Prior to reinstallation of airworthy castings, they shall be thoroughly cleaned and protected by application of zinc chromate primer.
Re-assembly shall be accomplished in accordance with Piper SB No. 155B.
Note: When any casting is replaced by its respective forging listed above the repetitive inspections of Paras. 1 and 2 are no longer required for that part.
Compliance: For Para. 1 - For castings previously inspected in accordance with the original issue of this Directive - at intervals not exceeding 100 hours time in service from the preceding inspection. For all other castings - within 100 hours time in service after 31 August 1971 and thereafter at intervals not exceeding 100 hours time in service.
For Para. 2 - For castings with more than 1000 hours time in service as at 31 August 1971 - within 100 hours time in service after 31 August 1971 and thereafter at intervals not exceeding 500 hours time in service.
