AD/LYC/87 Challenger Engineering Chrome Plated Cylinder Barrels

Applicability: All Lycoming opposed piston engines that have fitted, cylinder assemblies with barrels chrome plated for and supplied by Challenger Aero Engineering Pty Ltd (formerly Challenger Engineering Pty Ltd) after 1 January 1989.
Requirement: Remove affected cylinder assemblies from installed and uninstalled engines.
Removed cylinder assemblies are to be quarantined (refer notes below). Affected cylinder assemblies not installed on an engine are to be quarantined (refer notes below).
Compliance: For installed engines - Within 100 engine operating hours after 12 July 1990 or before 31 August 1990 whichever occurs first.
For uninstalled engines - Prior to installation after 12 July 1990.
Note 1: Affected cylinder assemblies quarantined by this Directive shall be classified as Major Defects and reported in accordance with CAO Section 100.8 Defect Reporting procedures.
Note 2 Quarantined assemblies are to be inhibited in accordance with Lycoming requirements.
Note 3: Disposition of quarantined assemblies shall be as notified by the Authority. Note 4: AD/ CON / 58 covers this subject for Continental engines.
Background: This Directive requires cylinder assemblies with barrels chrome plated by Challenger Aero Engineering Pty Ltd (formerly Challenger Engineering Pty Ltd) to be removed from service and quarantined.
Challenger rework of the affected cylinders, which was not approved by this Authority, included the removal and refitment of the cylinder head. The integrity of the cylinder head to barrel screwed joint cannot be assessed from the rework procedure used. Therefore, the airworthiness of engines fitted with the affected cylinders may be compromised.
The total number and location of affected cylinders is unknown and hence the generalised Directive Applicability. Some of the affected cylinders may have been identified by markings of "WR14" and/or a "CAE" prefix number.
