Flight Data Recorder and Flight Crew Compartment Voice Recorder - Installation

Applicability: All models. Requirement: Flight Data Recorder

  1. An approved Flight Data Recorder shall be installed. The recorder shall meet the

crash survival requirements of FAA Technical Standards Order C51a “AIRCRAFT FLIGHT RECORDERS”, and shall record data from which time, altitude, airspeed, vertical acceleration and heading may be determined within the ranges accuracies and at the recording intervals specified in FAA Technical Standard Order C51a except for vertical acceleration which shall be recorded at intervals of not more than one tenth of one second.

2.    The recorder shall be installed so that it can be operated continuously from when the aircraft begins to taxi under its own power for the purpose of flight at least until the conclusion of taxiing after landing.

3.    The recorder shall record data from which time correlation with the cockpit voice recorder can be established.

Note: An acceptable means of compliance with this requirement is the recording of data to mark each radio transmission.

Voice Recorder

4.    An approved voice recorder shall be installed. Compliance: Before 31 October 1973.

Note: Aircraft already complying with the preceding issue of this directive at the time

of issue of this issue of the directive are hereby deemed to satisfy the requirements of this issue.
