Eurocopter AS 350 (Ecureuil) Series Helicopters

Amdt 1


Tail Rotor Drive Shaft Bearings 8/98

 

Applicability: AS350 helicopters, versions B, B1, B2, D, BA, BB and B3 with tail rotor drive shaft rear section bearing mountings equipped with:

 

non-regreasable bearings

P/N SKF 6007.2RS 1 MT 47CA

(AS 704A33.651.010)

or regreasable bearings

P/N KOYO 83A 85 1C3

(AS 704A33.651.143)

Requirement: 1. Non Regreasable Bearings. Check the squareness of the bearings with respect to the drive shaft and the condition of the bearings and bearing mountings as per paragraphs 1C(1) and 1C(2) in AS 350 Service Bulletin No. 05.00.08 Revision 5.

 

2.    Regreasable Bearings. Visual and Condition checks of the bearings and bearing mounts to be performed as per paragraphs 1C(2)(B) of AS 350 Service Bulletin No.05.00.08 Revision 5. Grease the bearings as per Maintenance Manual (MET) work card 12.00.00.305.

 

3.    New Drive Shaft Rear Sections Drawn from Spares Holdings. Comply with the instructions of para 1C(3) of Service Bulletin No. 05.00.08 Revision 5.

 

Note 1: DGAC 98-173-073(A) dated April 22, 1998 refers. Note 2: This Directive supersedes AD/ECUREUIL/44 Amdt 1.

Compliance: 1. Non Regreasable Bearings. Within 50 flying hours following the effective date of this directive unless already done in compliance with AD/AS350/44 Amdt 1, henceforth cancelled. Thereafter perform the visual check of paragraph 1C(2)(B) of the reference Service Bulletin every 100 flying hours and the condition check of para 1C(2) every 400 flying hours.

 

2.    Regreasable Bearings. Greasing to be carried out within the next 100 flying hours from the effective date of this directive unless already done in compliance with AD/AS350/44, henceforth cancelled. Perform the visual check of paragraph 1C(2)(B) of the reference Service Bulletin every 100 flying hours and the condition check of para 1C(2) every 500 flying hours.

 

3.    Prior to fitment.

 

This amendment becomes effective on 16 July 1998.

 

Background: Reports of in-service failure of the tail rotor drive shaft rear section bearings led to development of this directive to prevent possible loss of tail rotor drive. This amendment refers to AD/ECUREUIL/44 Amdt 1 which has now been cancelled.
