AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE


For the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below issues the following Airworthiness Directive (AD) under subregulation 39.1 (1) of CAR 1998. The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.

Applicability: Model SR20, serial numbers 1005 through 1241, except 1235, 1237, and 1238.

 

Model SR22, serial numbers 0002 through 0333, except 0309, 0322, 0323, and 0328.

 

Requirement: Replace the self- locking retaining nut on the yaw trim cartridge and the roll trim cartridge with a new self- locking retaining nut, MS21044N3.

Note: FAA AD 2002-21-02 Amdt 39-12908 refers.

 

Compliance: Within 10 hours time in service after 8 November 2002.

 

This Airworthiness Directive becomes effective on 30 October 2002.

 

Background: The FAA received a report that, during flight test, the self- locking retaining nut on the yaw trim cartridge came off, and the pilot lost right rudder control. This Directive requires retaining nut replacement on both roll and yaw trim cartridges with new self- locking nuts with a higher axial load capability. Loss of a retaining nut during flight could result in jamming of corresponding flight control system, and loss of control of the aircraft.
