Off-Wing Escape Slide System 6/97
Applicability: Model 747-100, -200, and -300 series aircraft equipped with an off-wing, two-piece escape slide on door 3.
Requirement: Action in accordance with the technical requirements of FAA AD 97-03-19 Amdt 39- 9924.
Note: Boeing SB 747-25-2951 and OEA SB 2174200-25-013 refer.
Compliance: As specified in the Requirement Document with a revised effective date of 22 May 1997.
This Airworthiness Directive becomes effective on 22 May 1997.
Background: There had been reports of actuator and thruster malfunctions that were the result of oil leakage past defective or contaminated ‘o’ rings.
Amendment 1 required an inspection of the door opening thrusters and the door opening/snubbing actuators for proper oil quantity, and modification of the off-wing compartment latching assemblies.
Amendment 2 is issued in response to a new FAA AD. The FAA received reports indicating that the requirements of the existing FAA AD do not adequately detect leakage of fluid from the actuators. This Directive adds a requirement for replacement of the currently installed door opening thrusters with new, improved thrusters.
Amendment 1 of this Airworthiness Directive became effective on 2 February 1993. The original issue of this Airworthiness Directive became effective on 20 April 1989.
