AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE


For the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below issues the following Airworthiness Directive (AD) under subregulation 39.1 (1) of CAR 1998. The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.

Applicability

:


Honeywell International (formerly AlliedSignal Inc.) 36-300(A), 36-280(B) and 36- 280(D) Series Auxiliary Power Units (APU's) with load compressor impellers P/Ns 3822270-4 or 3822270-5 installed. These APUs may be installed on Airbus Industrie A319, A320, A321 series, Boeing 737-300, -400, -500 series and MD-80 series aircraft.

 

Requirement: 1. APUs fitted with load compressor impeller P/N 3822270-4. Install either:

 

(a)     an external load compressor containment shield: or

 

(b)     load compressor impeller P/N 3822270-5, in accordance with AlliedSignal Inc. SB GTCP36-49-7471 dated April 20, 1999, SB GTCP36-49-7472 dated March 31,1999, or GTCP36-49-7473 dated March 31,1999, as applicable.

 

2. APUs fitted with load compressor impeller P/N 3822270-5.

 

Install an external load compressor containment shield in accordance with AlliedSignal Inc. SB GTCP36-49-7471 dated April 20, 1999, SB GTCP36-49-7472 dated March 31,1999, or GTCP36-49-7473 dated March 31,1999, as applicable.

 

Note 1: FAA AD 2000-04-24 Amendment 39-11607 refers.

 

Compliance: 1. Unless previously accomplished, at next shop visit or within 6 months time in service after the effective date of this Directive, whichever occurs first.

 

Note 2: For the purpose of this Directive a shop visit is defined as when the APU is inducted into an APU workshop for any reason.

 

2. Unless previously accomplished, within 12 months time in service from the effective date of this Directive or prior to the impeller exceeding 26,000 cycles since new, whichever occurs later.

 

This Airworthiness Directive becomes effective on 10 August 2000.

Background:  This Directive is prompted by advice that the subject APUs have experienced separation of the load compressor impeller which resulted in un-contained APU failures and debris entering the APU compartment causing damage to the aircraft.
