EXPLANATORY STATEMENT
1. Authority for making the instrument. Australian National University Act 1991, s50.
2. Purpose and operation of the instrument. The Statute provides for the making of Rules or Orders prescribing academic and ceremonial dress for the University and related matters. The University’s academic and ceremonial dress is described in the Academic and Ceremonial Dress Order 2005 made under this Statute.
3. Documents incorporated in the instrument by reference. None.
4. Consultation process. The decision to make the Statute (and the related Order) was an executive decision. Interested parties were not consulted as the Statute and the Order replace an existing Council Resolution on Academic and Ceremonial Dress. Decisions about the colours on hoods used to signify individual awards of the University are made after taking into account the recommendation of the faculty or research school responsible for the award.
