CaseChat Overview and Summary
Colin Jefferies-Smith and Caseino Williams were sentenced following a six-week trial in which Jefferies-Smith was found guilty of manslaughter, while Williams was found guilty of unlawful possession of a firearm and being an accessory after the fact to manslaughter. Both defendants subsequently pleaded guilty to a number of additional charges. The court had to decide on appropriate sentences for both defendants. The court found that a starting point of ten years' imprisonment was appropriate for the manslaughter charge against Jefferies-Smith, which was reduced to nine years' imprisonment after a 10% discount for his early indication of a willingness to plead guilty. The court imposed a sentence of two years' imprisonment for the drug offences, to be served cumulatively with the manslaughter sentence, resulting in a total sentence of 11 years' imprisonment. For Williams, the court imposed a starting point of three years' imprisonment for the firearms charge and 18 months' imprisonment for the accessory charge, to be served cumulatively, resulting in a total sentence of three years and one month's imprisonment for the charges on which he was found guilty at trial. The court imposed a sentence of three years' imprisonment for the family violence charges, to be served cumulatively with the sentence for the charges from trial, resulting in a total sentence of six years and one month's imprisonment. The court made an order for the destruction of the firearm and ammunition produced at trial and made a protection order against Williams in favour of his former partner and her son.
