Westport Insurance Corporation and others (the appellants) appealed to the High Court of Australia against a decision of the Full Federal Court concerning the interpretation of a reinsurance contract. The Court reasoned that the reinsurance contract, by its terms, covered claims made during the period of the contract, and that the termination of the contract extinguished the respondent's obligations in respect of claims made thereafter, even if the underlying insured event occurred during the contract period. The Court applied principles of contractual interpretation, emphasising the plain meaning of the words used in the agreement and the importance of the contract's express terms regarding the timing of claims and the effect of termination. The appeal was dismissed.
