CaseChat Overview and Summary
The Medical Board of Queensland brought disciplinary proceedings against Dr Broadbent, a registered medical practitioner, under the Health Practitioners (Professional Standards) Act. The Board alleged that Dr Broadbent exhibited unsatisfactory professional conduct in the pre-operative and post-operative management of a patient who underwent biliary pancreatic diversion (BPD) by-pass surgery. The patient died following complications from the surgery. The tribunal was tasked with determining whether Dr Broadbent's conduct warranted disciplinary action.
The tribunal considered several issues, including whether Dr Broadbent provided adequate pre-operative nutritional advice to the patient, and whether he should have involved a dietician in the patient's care. It also examined whether Dr Broadbent arranged appropriate cover and pain management coordination for the patient during his absence interstate, and whether he recognised the occurrence of an anastomotic leak. Furthermore, the tribunal assessed whether it was appropriate for Dr Broadbent to perform gastrointestinal endoscopy on the patient, and whether his management of the patient contributed to the patient's death.
The tribunal found that Dr Broadbent's management of the patient was deficient in several respects. He did not provide sufficient pre-operative nutritional advice, and failed to involve a dietician in the patient's care. Dr Broadbent also did not arrange appropriate cover during his absence, and did not recognise the anastomotic leak. The tribunal concluded that Dr Broadbent's management of the patient contributed to the patient's death, and that his conduct constituted unsatisfactory professional conduct.
The tribunal ordered that Dr Broadbent's registration be suspended for a period of six months. The suspension will commence on the date of the order, and will be subject to certain conditions. Dr Broadbent is also required to complete a course of professional development in the areas of pre-operative and post-operative management of BPD by-pass surgery patients, and to submit a report to the Board within six months of the completion of the course.
