ALDEN & ACHESON

In the matter of *Alden & Acheson*, heard by Judge Coates, the dispute concerned parenting arrangements for three children. The proceedings were undefended, with the father not appearing or participating in the hearing. The mother sought orders regarding the children's residence, parental responsibility, and costs.

The court was required to determine the appropriate parenting orders in the absence of the father's participation. Specifically, the court needed to decide on sole parental responsibility for the mother, the children's living arrangements, the extent of the father's time with and communication with the children, and the provision of information to parents by medical and educational professionals. The court also had to consider whether to make orders regarding the parents' conduct towards each other and the children, and the question of costs.

Judge Coates made orders discharging previous arrangements and granting the mother sole parental responsibility for the children, with the children to live with her. The father was to spend time with and communicate with the children as agreed. The court also authorised medical practitioners and educational institutions to provide information to either parent at the requesting parent's expense. Crucially, orders were made prohibiting either parent from denigrating the other or family members in front of the children. The father was ordered to pay the mother's costs on a solicitor/client basis, fixed at $21,000.00.
