The Administrative Appeals Tribunal considered the case of a Sri Lankan citizen who sought protection in Australia. The applicant, a Tamil Hindu from Trincomalee, arrived in Australia in July 2012. The Tribunal considered the DFAT country information, which indicated a general easing of monitoring and harassment of Tamils under the Sirisena government, and noted that while security forces maintained a presence, incidences of detention and questioning had decreased. The Tribunal was not satisfied that the applicant's past experiences, viewed in light of the current country situation, established a real chance of him being persecuted upon return to Sri Lanka.

Consequently, the Tribunal affirmed the decision under review, meaning the applicant did not satisfy the criteria for a protection visa.
